The M1 road is a road in Malawi.[1][2][3] It runs the length of Malawi, from Karonga District in the north to Nsanje District in the south.[4][5][6][7] All the main towns have a tollgate connecting each city.[8] The M1 road infrastructure is the backbone of the whole Malawi as well as its economy. It is a paved road that facilitates trade between Tanzania and South Africa, as well as other neighboring countries.[9][10] In Northern Region, the road links Chitimba and Chiweta which in turn connects the northern part of the country with Tanzania.[11][12]

Route

The road runs from Nthalire in Chitipa connected away from Tanzania to Karonga District.[13]

Construction of other related roads

It was reported by the The Nation Newspaper in early 2023 that there were undergoing projects about the start of the M1 project between Lilongwe and Rumphi. The project was expected to cost more than $129 billion, was not started because the ESMP had not been approved.[14][15]
