Good evening everyone, I am Jackie Nespral. And I am Trina Robinson with Adam Kuperstein. He is joining us live from the campus of Nova South Eastern University tonight. He is on the day 3 of NBC6 college tour. Hi Adam. Hey Jackie, Hey Trina. This school Nova South Eastern University is 28,000 strong and I think half the school made it out here today for college week on NBC6. We have got the cheerleaders and the students are doing their fins up sign for the sharks. The basket ball team is here, we even have a DJ. It is going to be a lot of fun today, Ross is going to teach you a lot about what makes this school so special, a huge educational program, also they have a dental school that has helped save a lot of money on their dental work, on top of that some students here get to spend their time in class underwater. It is all coming up on college week on NBC6. Rights now, let's go back into the studio to today's news. And Adam will be tweeting from the campus throughout the 90 min of news site you can join him using the hash tag #NSUON6. I am Adam Kuperstein live at Nova South Eastern University in Davie, I am going to show you how some of the students here at Nova South Eastern University from South Florida beaches stay as beautiful as they are. And you have got to see this, Joe Rose is here for the sports, rights now he's working the DJ turntables. I kid you not, Joe Rose is taking over the DJ table, that cant be a good thing for Nova South Eastern. We will be back right after this. You hear the music and you know it is college week. While today's stop on the NBC6 college week tour takes us to Nova Southeastern University. And guess who is there having a grand old time, Adam Kuperstein, Hi. Hey Jackie & Trina. It is a good time these students came out in full force. I was just talking to some of the students who are student government over here. You know Nova Southeastern University 70+ on-campus clubs they have a lot of fun here. When they are not in class they of course like to go to the beach and spend time in the water. But listen to this there are some students at Nova Southeastern that actually do that as part of their studies. Check it out. These college students truly plunged into their studies. We are going to study one of our coral nursery. This is the video of graduate students at Nova South Eastern University, they are part of the oceanography program and on this day they are checking the condition of coral after tropical storm Issac passed through. Our coral reefs are one of our prime economic engines. And that is part of the reason why Nova South Eastern University just built this. The largest coral reef Center in America in Dania Beach. Anytime you are on the cutting edge of any type of experiment or research it is very exciting. Inside this Center of excellence for Coral Reef ecosystems research, we found students examining the effects of the BP oil spill on crustations. Other students are cultivating coral reef in an aquarium. This is something that we would start with a Coral this size. Keri O'Neil says they started with 50 small ones and now they have 250 the size of a basketball. I have worked in the aquarium industry for a long time and it is something that I have always dreamed of; to be able to grow corals and actually use them for restoration. The students and professors at Nova's coral reef research Center love what they do but they also recognize how critical this workplace all over the world; but specially here in South Florida. Protecting our reefs means protecting our peaches from severe coastal erosion and also protecting our fisheries and food source and our tourism industry. The Nova Coral Reef research Center has a grand opening coming up in two weeks. It is a $50 million facility and is the largest in the country it is something that we are proud of here at the Nova South Eastern University. Now something else is really cool, the students have already started using social media to get the word out and show their spirit with the hash tag #NUSON6 on twitter and on Instagram #COLLEGEWEEKON6 . And that is how we are doing here on College Week stop number 3 at Nova South Eastern University. Can we have Joe Rose for a second. I actually got to meet some of the basketball team, the women's basketball team here, great athletic programs in fact I'm a little worried they are as tall as we are. Well they are very good here in a lot of different sports. They have 17 different programs. They have a national championship team and an Olympian. And we're going to be talking to that Olympian coming up in sports. We are going to know more about the sports here at the Nova South Eastern University. For now we are going back to the studio. Okay, Adam and Joe, thanks. Tomorrow, by the way, our college week tour takes us to Miami Dade College, we will be live at five from the Kendall campus, you can start tweeting about it with the hash tag #MiamiDadeCollegeon6. I am Joe Rose from the Nova Southeastern sports department is very, very good, we are going to be talking to an Olympic swimmer and find out more about the sports department when we come back, stay with us. This is Nova South Eastern University, where the kids are happy and cheering as we continue our college week on NBC6. And that is where we find our NBC6 sports anchor Joe Rose who has become a DJ, you are spinning tunes. What is going on Joe? I will tell you Jackie there is a lot of school spirit here at the Nova Southeastern University. They have 17 different programs, they have been very successful in a lot of them. Let's go ahead and take a look quickly and talk about it. The Men's Golf team are the reigning national champions, The Women's Golf team has won 4 straight national championships. JD Martinez of the Houston Astros is one of the three major leaguers in NSU. They also have a Olympian on the swim team, the school's first ever Olympian, Esau Simpson, who joins me right now from the 100m at Greneda back from the Olympics. I have got to ask you, what was the experience like being over there and now coming back and being a student? It was ridiculous, just the sheer magnitude of competition with all the big guys like Michael Phelps I had to look up to and compete with. It was fantastic, man. And to come back here and start school with all my school mates again is so encouraging to start a new collegiate season and I just get back into it. Well we don't alot about the sports program. Talk about the swimming as someone who is doing really well, talk about it. Brand new program 2 years strong, back to back Men's championships and brand new women's championships as of last year. We just go for nationals now, Nationals is on our list and we are ready to do it. I can see the school pride you have here, it's great to see everybody out and what was it like when everybody recognized you when you came back from Olympic experience. Yes, definitely a lot of people say hi and everything in the mornings. Definitely a lot of Shark pride in the room. So it is just great to be back. Wanted to ask you, you are 21, only 21, expect to be back in 4 years going to next summer Olympics? Rio 2016, I am there, I'll try my best. God I'm hoping I will be there. Talk about this school itself, the school, the academics. What did you expect it to be? It's great. Its structured and built for you to succeed. When you come here as a freshman, you are here to succeed. You already succeeded coming here. You just have to follow through in academics as well as athletics. Esau, thank you so much, and congratulations on your swimming career. It's great to have you with us here. We are going go ahead and throw it back, ladies take it away. We have a lot more on sports coming up, in just a few minutes stay with us. Thank you Joe, He is having a real good time out there. He is having too much of a good time out there. And you know what he doesn't have to keep his day job because he is a pretty good DJ. What a turnout here at the Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Its Day3 of College week on NBC6. And coming up we will show you why these students are boasting about one of the busiest dental clinics in the country, and one of the most affordable for you. That is ahead. College week continues on NBC6. Today we are focusing Nova Southeastern University. Adam Kuperstein joins live from their campus in Davie with more, it's a great campus. It is a beautiful campus, Jackie. I got a chance to spend sometime on the campus before we started here and these students are so energetic and they are also really bright and they are helping our community too. Did you know this 7000 students of Nova Southeastern are studying some sort of health profession and they are becoming our future nurses and physical therapists. To top it off there's a Med school here and a Dental school here. And south Floridians are really proud because that dental school is helping them save money. Here is how. More than 24,000 patients visit this clinic every year. More than 185,000 procedures; everything from root canal to Dentures. There are 172 dental chairs and that makes it one of the largest and busiest dental clinics in the entire country. The patients here say they get the extra attention of professors and students working on their case together. And those procedures generally cost half the price of what they would at a private dental office. A lot of these patients don't have dental insurance that most people do have. So it makes it very affordable and the experience is much more rewarding because you are serving patients who otherwise don't get that service they need. They explain more and they are really tell you what they will do. They explain you the cost and you can spread it out all the time that you are in here so that you don't have to pay upfront I think it is great. NSU's dental school is a dual admit program, which means students here are guaranteed a spot as long as they meet their requirements on the dental program. Also something else we caught up here at the Nova Southeastern University is the Business School. The MBA program is the largest in the state here at Nova. We found this fascinating, the school is attracting more and more students who aren't necessarily interested in majoring in business. You see the Hizinga Sales Institute is where they can perfect the technique of closing a deal. They can even study their own moves on camera as they do it. A lot of different students say that they are learning how to sell themselves better in a job interview and even becoming more effective asking for a raise that is always important. Also, you can earn a bachelors degree in sales here at Nova Southeastern University. We want to welcome the president George Hanbury. You can hear they are happy with the school, what is it I keep hearing that they are so happy here, why do you think that is? Well you talked about our professional and graduate programs that is 80% of our student body, 28,000 students. We have 6,000 undergraduates and these are some of the great undergraduate programs. over 270 athletes, 3,000 first time and college students, which means our classrooms are small. I just read that the average classroom size is 22, that is small. Less than 20 to 22 per classroom. Individual attention as a private not-for-profit our number we do want to nurture our number one interest is the student, and that is one of our values. We earlier showed the coral reef research center, a beautiful facility and grand opening coming up. How proud are you? A 50 million dollar facility just opening. 50 million there, and we will spend another 100 million so that by 2020 we have $300 million dollar of extended funded research coming in to Broward County and Nova Southeastern University. We see the place not only as a great educational institution but also part of the knowledge base industry that the university can be and should be. And on top of that the students here have fun out here, that's for sure. They do. Go Sharks and Fins up everybody. It's a good move from the President there. Thank you so much for your time. Thanks Adam. Thanks for being part of college week, it was great to have you guys here. Fins up, can we have that one more time for everybody at NBC6. There it is. That is the sharks at the Nova Southeastern University. We will be back with more on NBC6's college week coming up next. Day 3 of NBC6 College Week takes us to Nova Southeastern University. Adam Kuperstein is spending the afternoon on campus in Davie and he joins us live once again. And he has a preview of what is coming up tomorrow. Well, Jackie, it has been lot of fun. Great hosts here at Nova Southeastern University. We went indoors because there is some rain outside. Tomorrow we will be heading south to Kendall We'll be at Miami-Dade college. We visited a number of their campuses and great stories including how some students want to make it big in Hollywood. And they believe that road to success starts at the Miami-Dade's new state of the art production studios that is in North Dade. It's a dream come true for Film students, Actors and even Music students. Now that is going to be fun. Back out here at Nova Southeastern University in Davie we are encouraging people to tweet, your tweeting right now with hash tag #NSUON6, last chance for students and Alums to get on twitter with the hash tag #NSUON6 or on Instagram, post your pictures showing your sprit for your school with the hash tag #COLLEGEWEEKON6. That is a wrap of day 3, see you on day 4 at Miami-Dade college. Take care. hello everybody and welcome back I am Joe Rose live here at Nova Southeastern University, a sports program that they are very proud of. We are joined by Mike Mominey. Hey Mike. Just talk to us about how proud you are, of the championships and what you have been able to accomplish in a short period of time. All right. Well it has been a great run Joe. First of all we are happy that you are here and we can promote our program. You know we have 17 teams here at Nova Southeastern. We compete in NCAA division2 level, sunshine state conference. We have had the great fortune to win 5 national championships and 19 conference championships just in the last 8 years. On top of that you also have very famous Alum here as well that people aren't aware of. There are, on the athletics side we have 3 former baseball players playing at the major league level. Most recently Mike Friers who is a pitcher Brewers is pitched against Marlins down here. We also have Sandra Sankeshya she was the four time national champion and she is out on the LPGA tour, so we are proud of our alumni. You and I were talking earlier, the location here is great, but the pride from what you have been able to get from your Men and Women's teams is fantastic. There is and I think it starts with the students Joe. You guys got to experience that today and we have all the support from board of trustees, President Hanbury and most importantly the students, we are a student based organization and of course the student athletes have done such a great job representing us on and off the field. This is their best kept secrets we have had. What you are able to look is some of the things coming up, where you have lot of Sport teams playing right now. We do, we have two soccer games going on tonight, so the women are probably in to their half time against Florida Southern we opened up conference today in Men's and Women's soccer. And we also have volleyball opening up on Friday against Lynn University. We are off and running and we look forward to a great year this year. Mike, Thank you so much for spending time with us. Razor the Shark you look fantastic. Let me tell you the Miami Dolphins who are also here at this facility have a big football game coming up against Raiders. Courtney Fallan has this report. I think that is going to do it from here. Razor, my friend the Shark wants to say good bye. Ladies, take it away here. Fins up, Fins up Joe. Joe, love the shirt. I mean It is so you. Although maybe he should get it a size larger. Just kidding. Just kidding, just kidding Never seen him this casual by the way. He is spinning away Oh, he is having a good time.
