List of MPs elected in the United Kingdom general election, 2017

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fifty-seventh Parliament of the United Kingdom is the legislature of the United Kingdom following the 2017 general election of Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons. The Parliament, which consists of the House of Lords and the elected House of Commons, was convened at the Palace of Westminster by Queen Elizabeth II on 21 June 2017. Each of Parliament's 650 constituencies returns one MP to the House of Commons.[1]

Including newcomers and returning MPs, 208 women were elected in this general election.[2]

House of Commons composition

Below are graphical representations of the House of Commons showing party strengths directly after the 2017 general election, and currently. This is not a seating plan of the House of Commons, which has five rows of benches on each side, with the government party to the right of the Speaker and opposition parties to the left, but with room for only around two-thirds of MPs to sit at any one time.

This table shows the number of MPs in each party:

Affiliation Members[3]
Elected Current
Conservative 317 316
Labour 262 257
SNP 35 35
Liberal Democrat 12 12
DUP 10 10
Sinn Féin 7 7
Plaid Cymru 4 4
Green 1 1
  Independent 1 7
  Speaker 1 1
  Vacant 0 0
Total 650
Voting total 639 639
Majority threshold 320 320
Gov short by 4 4
Gov + C&S majority 13 13
Notes
  • For full details of changes during the 57th Parliament, see Defections, suspensions and removal of whip and By-elections.
  • In addition to the parties listed in the table above, the Co-operative Party is also represented in the House of Commons by 38 Labour MPs sitting with the Labour Co-operative designation.
  • "Members elected" refers to the composition resulting from the election on 8 June 2017, but note that the confidence and supply arrangement (referred to in the final row as C&S) was only reached on 26 June.
  • The "voting total" is the effective size of the House excluding vacancies, suspensions, the Speaker (originally Conservative) and three Deputy Speakers (two Labour and one Conservative) who have only a tie-breaking vote constrained by conventions,[4] and seven abstentionist members (Sinn Féin). Ten members are currently excluded under this definition.
  • The "majority threshold", the number of seats needed to have a majority of one, and "Gov short by", the margin by which the governing Conservatives are short of that majority, are based on the voting total. The "Gov + C&S majority" is calculated as the sum of voting Conservative and Democratic Unionist Party members, less the sum of all other voting members.

List of MPs elected in the general election

The following table is a list of MPs elected, ordered by constituency. Names of incumbents are listed where they stood for re-election; for details of defeated new candidates and the incumbent who stood down in those cases see individual constituency articles.

Notes
  1. ^ a b c d The incumbents for these seats were originally members of political parties before either being suspended or resigning from their respective parties and subsequently sitting as independents for the remainder of the Parliament.

Deputy Speakers

The Speaker nominated Sir David Amess (Conservative, Southend West) and George Howarth (Labour, Knowsley) to serve as Temporary Deputy Speakers until the Deputy Speakers had been elected. The election of Deputy Speakers took place on 28 June 2017.

Although Deputy Speakers do not resign from their parties, they cease to vote (except to break ties) and they do not participate in party-political activity until the next election.

Name Party Constituency Office
Lindsay Hoyle Labour Chorley Chairman of Ways and Means
Eleanor Laing Conservative Epping Forest First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means
Rosie Winterton Labour Doncaster Central Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means

As the only contesting member from the government side, Eleanor Laing's name did not appear on the ballot paper, and she was duly declared First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means.

By-elections

By-elections are held for seats that become vacant.

By-election Date Incumbent Party Winner Party Cause
Lewisham East 14 June 2018 Heidi Alexander Labour Janet Daby Labour Resignation on appointment as Deputy Mayor of London[8]
West Tyrone 3 May 2018 Barry McElduff Sinn Féin Órfhlaith Begley Sinn Féin Resignation after becoming embroiled in a social media controversy regarding a perceived sectarian tweet on the 42nd anniversary of the Kingsmill massacre[9]

Defections, suspensions and removal of whip

The label under which MPs sit in the House of Commons can change if they defect from or are suspended or expelled by their party. When suspended, they effectively[10] become independents.

Name Date Source Party Destination Party Constituency Reason
Anne Marie Morris 10 July 2017 Conservative Independent Newton Abbot Suspended pending investigation over using the racist remark "Nigger in the woodpile"[11]
12 December 2017 Independent Conservative Whip restored[10]
Jared O'Mara 25 October 2017 Labour Independent Sheffield Hallam Suspended pending investigation over alleged sexist and homophobic remarks[12]
3 July 2018 Independent Labour Whip restored[13]
12 July 2018 Labour Independent Resigned from the Labour Party, claiming: "I am of the opinion that the Labour Party no longer shares my commitment to the true definition of equality and compassion".[14]
Kelvin Hopkins 2 November 2017 Labour Independent Luton North Suspended pending investigation on the basis of sexual allegations received by the Labour Party[15]
Charlie Elphicke 3 November 2017 Conservative Independent Dover Suspended pending police investigation of "serious allegations"[16]
Ivan Lewis 23 November 2017 Labour Independent Bury South Suspended pending party investigation after allegations of sexual harassment[7]
Barry McElduff 8 January 2018 Sinn Féin Independent West Tyrone Suspended by Sinn Fein over a video he posted on social media seen as mocking Protestant victims of the Kingsmill massacre. Never took his seat due to policy of abstentionism by Sinn Fein. A few days after he was suspended, he resigned, triggering a by-election.[17]
John Woodcock 30 April 2018 Labour Independent Barrow and Furness Suspended over allegations he sent inappropriate messages to a former female member of staff.[18] He formally quit the Labour Party on 18 July 2018, saying the party had been "taken over by the hard left" and "tolerated" anti-Semitism.[19]
Ian Paisley 24 July 2018 DUP Independent North Antrim Suspended from the DUP pending internal investigation, following a report by the House of Commons Standards Committee. The Committee had found that he had failed to register benefits from the Sri Lankan government in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests, and had subsequently advocated for that government.[20]
4 September 2018 Independent Suspended The House of Commons Standards Committee recommended Paisley's suspension from the House for 30 sitting days beginning 4 September, which Parliament approved on 24 July.[20] His constituents had an opportunity to sign a recall petition; the signatures of 10% of the electorate would have unseated him altogether and triggered a by-election.[21][22] As the petition had only 7,099 signatures (9.4% of North Antrim's 75,430 electorate), Paisley retains his seat, although he continues to be suspended for the remainder of the 30 days.[23]
21 November 2018 Suspended DUP Suspension finished and party whip restored.[24]
Andrew Griffiths 21 August 2018 Conservative Independent Burton Suspended from the Conservative whip, pending independent investigation, following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. A complaint was also made to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.[25]
Frank Field 30 August 2018 Labour Independent Birkenhead Resigned the Labour whip, saying the leadership is becoming "a force for anti-Semitism in British politics". He also blamed a "culture of intolerance, nastiness and intimidation" in local parties.[26]
