Lihie Raz (Hebrew: ליהיא רז; born 14 September 2003)[1] is an American-born Israeli artistic gymnast. She won the bronze medal on the floor exercise at the 2020 European Championships which is Israel's first medal at the European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She is also the 2019 and 2021 Israeli all-around champion. She represented Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics and finished 59th in the all-around during qualifications, but did not advance to any finals. She will represent Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Early life

Raz was born in New York City to Israeli parents Tami and Nitzan Raz, and she immigrated with them to Israel when she was three months old. She grew up in Ramat HaSharon and is Jewish.[2] She began gymnastics when she was six years old under coach Moran Klefner, who is still coaching her today.[3]

Career

2017–2018

At the 2017 Maccabiah Games, Raz made her international debut and won the gold medal on the floor exercise with a score of 11.775.[4] She won the junior all-around bronze medal at the 2018 Israeli Cup.[5] Then at the 2018 Austrian Team Open, she helped the Israeli team place 14th, and individually, she placed 17th in the all-around.[6] At the Youth Olympic Games Qualifier, she placed 26th in the all-around and did not qualify for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.[7][8] She placed fifth in the all-around at the 2018 Junior Israeli Championships.[9]

Raz competed with the Israeli team at a friendly meet against Romania, and she placed ninth in the all-around.[10] She was selected to compete at the 2018 Junior European Championships where the Israeli team finished 23rd.[11] She placed ninth with the Israeli team at the Olympic Hopes Cup.[12] Then at the 2018 Voronin Cup, she placed 10th in the all-around, fourth on vault, eight on the uneven bars and balance beam, and sixth on the floor exercise.[13]

2019

Raz made her senior international debut at the Austrian Team Open where she placed eighth in the all-around and fourth with the Israeli team.[14] Then at the Stella Zakharova Cup, she won the bronze medal on the floor exercise behind Angelina Radivilova and Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, and she placed fourth on the vault.[15] She placed sixth in the vault final at the 2019 Osijek World Challenge Cup.[16] At the Israeli Championships, she won her first national all-around title with a total score of 46.350.[17] Then at the World Championships, she finished 82nd in the all-around which qualified her for the 2020 Olympics.[18][19]

2020–2021

Raz at the 2022 European Championships

At the 2020 European Championships, Raz won the bronze medal in the floor exercise event final with a score of 12.750 behind Turkey's Göksu Üçtaş Şanlı and Romania's Larisa Iordache.[20] This made her Israel's first ever medalist at the European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships.[3][21] Additionally, she was the third reserve for the vault final after finishing 11th in the qualification round.[22]

In February, Raz won the bronze medal in the all-around at the 2021 Israeli Winter Cup.[23] She then qualified for the all-around final at the 2021 European Championships and finished 22nd with a total score of 47.499.[24] She won her second national all-around title at the 2021 Israeli Championships.[25] She then represented Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics and finished 59th in the all-around during the qualification round with a total score of 50.399.[26]

2022

Raz finished sixth on the vault and seventh on the balance beam at the Varna World Challenge Cup.[27] Then at the Koper World Challenge Cup, she finished seventh on uneven bars and balance beam and fourth on floor exercise.[28] At the 2022 Maccabiah Games, she helped the Israeli team win gold, and individually, she swept the gold medals.[29] She qualified for the vault final at the European Championships and finished seventh.[30] She was initially the first reserve for the vault final at the World Championships.[31] After Jessica Gadirova withdrew due to an ankle injury, Raz competed in the final and placed eighth.[32][33]

2023

Raz began the season at the Luxembourg Open and won the gold medal in the vault final. The Israeli team finished third behind Italy and Spain, and Raz placed sixth in the all-around. She also finished seventh on uneven bars, ninth on balance beam, and fifth on floor exercise.[34] She competed at the European Championships but did not qualify for any finals.[35] At the Tel Aviv World Challenge Cup, she finished sixth on vault and floor exercise and eighth on balance beam.[36] Then at the RomGym Trophy, she placed sixth in the all-around and fifth in the uneven bars final.[37] She finished 48th in the all-around at the World Championships with a total score of 49.999.[38] Raz earned an individual berth as the 13th highest placing eligible gymnast.[39]
