Founded in 1931 and originally know as the Society for Applied Microbiology, Applied Microbiology International (AMI), is one of the world's first microbiology societies. It operates with the visionary goal that microbiology has the potential to tackle some of the most significant global challenges.[1] AMI's mission is to develop and engage a worldwide, interdisciplinary community focused on applied microbiology, fostering opportunities for collaboration and spearheading advancements in the field. AMI is an active member of the Royal Society of Biology, and the Federation of European Microbiological Societies. Under the organisation's current president, Professor Jack Gilbert, it continues to inspire and facilitate groundbreaking research and partnerships in microbiology, contributing significantly to the scientific and global community's efforts to solve critical issues.[2]

Horizon Awards

Since its inception in 1984, Applied Microbiology International's Horizon Awards have annually honored pioneers in the field of microbiology. These prestigious awards celebrate outstanding contributions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, covering various categories that reflect the breadth of microbiology's impact on global challenges. Categories such as the WH Pierce Global Impact in Microbiology Prize and the Rachel Carson Environmental Conservation Excellence Award showcase the awards' focus on recognising individuals who lead in innovation, policy to practice, environmental conservation, and more. Through these awards, AMI continues to highlight the crucial role of microbiologists in advancing our understanding and application of microbiological research toward sustainable development and global well-being.[6]
