Turkey Run is an amazing place. It is very unique in Indiana. It has perhaps some of the most beautiful vistas in the whole state, it has 100 foot relief and so people are often very surprised when they come to this park as was Richard Lieber, who is considered the father of Indiana state parks. He came here, he saw it, and said this needs to be conserved for the future. Visitors coming to Turkey Run State Park can stay at the Turkey Run Inn, if they like. It’s a lodge that was built in 1919. They can horseback ride when they’re here. They can swim in an Olympic size swimming pool, they can camp in a modern campground. But the big draw to Turkey Run, the reason that about 750,000 people per year come to this park are the hiking trails. We have 11 extraordinary, beautiful hiking trails. Some of them are rather easy, most are very rugged and you are going to have an amazing experience if you challenge yourself with these trails. Now behind me you’ll see a 202 foot bridge suspended by two steel cables. It is the only suspended bridge in the state parks system, we’re very proud of it. But that is the gateway to the Rocky Hollow Falls Canyon Nature Preserve. When you cross that bridge you are on our most famous trail – Trail 3 – and that trail will hook you into most of the other trails in the park. Well there are many people who come to the park who think Trail 3 is the place to go. Their favorite spot might be the ladders or the Punch Bowl or the Devil’s Ice Box. But my favorite spot in this park is the Richard Lieber Memorial. Richard Lieber’s body is actually buried here at the park in tribute to him. And there is a bronze monument there. And it’s a very peaceful hemlock grove. This is, I think, the most peaceful spot in the park and I love nothing better than to go there and regroup and get ready for a new day. This is a place where you can come and you can reconnect with nature and you can walk into Rocky Hollow Canyon and you can see shafts of sunlight shining through misty vistas and it’s just really a place to truly a place to commune with nature, to relax and to restore yourself so that you can face the rest of your life. So we would love to see you here at Turkey Run. Whether it’s fishing or camping or hiking that you enjoy, there is sure to be something at Turkey Run that you are going to love.
