The Kawkawlin River is a 17.5-mile-long (28.2 km)[1] stream in the U.S. state of Michigan that flows into Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron at 43°39′30″N 83°53′00″W / 43.65833°N 83.88333°W / 43.65833; -83.88333,[2] approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the mouth of the Saginaw River.

The Kawkawlin has two main branches, the North Branch, which is the longer branch, and the South Branch, which is also known as simply the Kawkawlin River. The confluence of the north and south branches northwest of Bay City at 43°38′43″N 83°57′11″W / 43.64528°N 83.95306°W / 43.64528; -83.95306, just a little more than one mile from the mouth of the river.[3] The North Branch rises from the confluence of Hoffman Drain and Watson Drain at 43°49′48″N 84°10′21″W / 43.83000°N 84.17250°W / 43.83000; -84.17250, at the southeast corner of Gladwin County.[3] Upstream from the confluence with the North Branch, the Kawkawlin (or the South Branch), rises from the confluence of Dietline and Betzoid drains at 43°39′32″N 84°04′01″W / 43.65889°N 84.06694°W / 43.65889; -84.06694.[2]

Transcription

As scientists, we learn a lot in the classroom and the lab. This study allows us to use what we know to help the community. We were looking for a project where we could really make an impact close by the school, in the community, and there was this need on the Kawkawlin River. There's been issues for years where people have reported algae and bacteria, and so on. Thereâ an effort to restore the river, and they needed data. So the need and our desire to do some more met, and we talked to some more people who were also working on the river, and that's how it all came together: we put our skills together with the people that needed them. College hasn't been what I would have pictured at all. My time at Saginaw Valley has been way more work on projects I find interesting and that I'm personally involved in than anything I'd ever pictured. We're doing this to see what's going on with the river. There's been some high algae growth in the past, and that could be leading to eutrophication of the river, which we want to stop from happening if we can. Eutrophication occurs when there are high nutrient levels in a water system, that allows lots of algae and bacteria growth to occur, and essentially, the river can get completely covered with algae if it gets to a certain point. It would suffocate the river. We're also worried about bacteria levels. So we're testing that to see what'going on with that, to see if it's a one-time thing or if it's a progression. We're checking a bunch of different water quality parameters: bacteria, phosphates, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, ammonia, water temperature's alot of different parameters to see what's actually going on in the water chemistry. We were initially funded by the GLISTEN program from the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement. This spring, we went to a conference, and they cited our project as one of the GLISTEN projects that should be a national example for these types of community collaborations. I'm not from this area originally, but I grown to love with it while going to school up here, and it's nice to be able to work on something that can eventually impact the community for the better.
