History

The station opened on 20 April 1946, initially named Kawarayu Station (川原湯駅).[1] With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR East. It was renamed Kawarayu-Onsen on 1 December 1991.[citation needed]

In fiscal 2019, the station was used by an average of 18 passengers daily (boarding passengers only).[2]
