[HorribleSubs] Kaiji - Ultimate Survivor - 02.ass (DOWNLOAD SUBTITLES)

A ship, on which desperate folk gather for a night of gambling,

the ship of hope, Espoir.

The gamble which Kaiji and the rest will be taking part in...

...consists of four cards each of Rock, Scissors and Paper:

a game of 12 cards in total.

It's Restricted Rock, Scissors and Paper!

Now, please open envelope B which you were handed.

Stars?

Open Fire

You should find three stars.

They are meant to be attached to the plate on your left pocket.

Please put them on now.

That's all, preparations are over.

Use the cards to play Rock, Scissors and Paper...

...and get your opponents' stars.

That's what the game is about.

Hall master Tonegawa then proceeded to explain...

...the rules of Restricted Rock, Scissors and Paper.

To start a duel, say "Check".

Then say "Set".

Finally, say "Open".

The stars don't change hands if it's a draw.

But upon a win, the winner takes one star from the loser,

and attaches it to his chest.

Choose your opponents freely among those present here,

and repeat the process.

The used cards will be placed inside a box.

The cards in the box will be indicated by the electric board.

Each participant was given four of each type of card.

There are 103 participants in all, hence 412 of each card.

The duration of the game is four hours.

You win if you manage to keep your three stars,

no matter the results during the game.

It's simple as that.

But you must use up all 12 of your cards.

Disposal of the cards are not allowed.

When the game is over, those with two stars or less,

those with three stars or more but failed to use up their cards,

and those who lost all their stars are considered losers.

In other words, in this gamble,

the stars are your life gauge.

And the cards are your chances.

The organisers will put the leftover cards into a box,

to make sure there is no mistake in the total number of cards.

No mistake in the total number of cards.

That's the end of my explanation.

I wish all of you a good game.

Wait!

What do we do with the money we borrowed?

Do as you please with it.

Huh?

I said at the start that we will not answer your questions.

Please use your war funds as you see fit.

As we see fit?

What happens when we lose?

Tell us what will happen then!

The yakuza middlemen told me to ask onboard the ship!

I am sorry, but we are unable to answer your questions.

What did you say?

Shouldn't you at least tell us what happens if we lose?!

Yeah! Don't mess with us!

Say it!

- Yeah, yeah! - Are you insulting us?!

Silence.

I'll kill you! You lot of trash...

This guy...

It is easy to answer your questions.

But what's the point of asking what will happen when you lose?

If you wish to hear, I can tell you all you want.

But you have no way of confirming the truth.

Do you still want to hear it?

All of you are here because you're losers in society itself.

You're all loved by no one, broke...

...and crawling around the fringes of society.

Rather than think of what hell you'll face after losing,

why can't you realise...

...that you're already at the pit of hell's cauldron?

But you're still hanging by a thread.

About half of you will be pulled out of this cauldron.

What you should be doing now is to win!

Win, and get out of here!

Grind it into your mind!

To win... Winning is everything!

If you don't win, you're trash!

If you don't win...

If you don't win...

If you don't win...

Tonegawa stepped down after that resounding speech.

And then...

The game began!

Darn it, what should I do?

At a glance, there's a 50-50 chance of winning.

But there must be something to increase the odds of victory...

Alright! I did it!

The first loser has appeared.

In under 10 minutes of the game, he lost all his three stars.

In this gamble, each round is played in less than 10 seconds.

Losing three in a row takes just a few minutes.

One can be out of the game very quickly.

One by one, the losers appear.

What are these guys thinking?

They don't seem to have lost a major challenge at all.

I know what you're thinking, brother.

If you lose this game, you're as good as dead.

It's a gamble one should face while resolved to die.

It's not something to be left to pure luck.

Right, Mr. Kaiji?

How do you know my name?

During the lending of funds, you were behind me...

...and borrowed to the maximum limit.

That left an impression on me that you're different.

Do you... remember what my name is?

Funai.

Whoa! I'm so glad you remember me!

Stop it! You're acting too familiar.

Don't say that, Mr. Kaiji.

Why don't we team up?

- Team up? - That's right.

To survive this gamble, a partner is essential.

If you can find a good partner,

you have a 100% chance of winning till the end.

100%?

Correct.

Quit fooling around! There's no such thing...

Mr. Kaiji, what were we told to do...

...in order to win this game?

Finish using all the cards.

What else?

Three stars.

Right!

Having three stars mean to maintain your current status.

Anyone will do.

Team up with someone and play.

All you have to do is to draw.

That would fulfill all the conditions.

We use up all the cards and each keep three stars.

You...

100%!

It's a 100% way of survival!

You figured all that?

I am a repeater.

Repeater?

Yeah.

I see some familiar faces here from the previous ship.

You're kidding! Isn't that unfair?!

Well, now's not the time to be angry about that.

Actually, Mr. Kaiji, you can sell these stars.

Huh?

When the game ends, those with extra stars start selling them.

At a rate of a few million for one star.

This money is for that purpose.

But in that case, even if everyone tries to draw,

someone will betray their partner...

for the sake of getting more stars.

Although there's a perfect way to survive this game,

there is no sure way to increase your stars.

If we fight it out squarely, half of us will lose.

If we lose, it's the end.

Rumour has it that some are locked up to do forced labour,

and others, after being used as guinea pigs...

...for drug experiments, become paralysed.

Listen, Mr. Kaiji. We can't afford to lose on this ship.

You mustn't be greedy. Survive by drawing.

And with the debt cleared, isn't that enough?

Well, Mr. Kaiji?

Let's survive this together!

I want to, but...

I have a problem.

I borrowed 10 million.

So, I'll have an interest of 4 million at the end.

In that case, I need 3.85 million to clear my debt.

So, my funds are...

Oh, Mr. Kaiji, you don't understand at all!

Didn't they say the interest accumulates every 10 minutes?

Huh?

In other words, it adds up every 10 minutes.

Which also means that if you finish the duel quick,

you'll have less interest.

If we start now, we can finish in 20 minutes.

So, we'll end up with an interest of 300,000.

300,000?!

Correct.

And that's why they say time equals to money.

Even one minute is too much to waste!

With that, Kaiji accepted the offer.

And started to play.

You got it? Don't mix it up.

The sequence is Rock, Scissors, Paper.

If we play quickly, it won't even take two minutes.

Alright, let's go!

- Check. - Huh? R-Right.

Set.

Open!

I'm saved!

Heaven has not abandoned me on this devil-forsaken ship.

It arranged for me to meet someone like Funai.

I am indeed fortunate.

They continued to draw for nine rounds.

At this rate, Kaiji and Funai will finish their cards.

But something happened in the 10th round.

Set!

Open!

Huh?

Oh, no! What have I done?

I made a terrible mistake!

I'm very sorry, Mr. Kaiji!

No choice then! Let's equal up at the next go.

Next, let's go with this.

O-Okay.

Funai showed Kaiji a Rock card,

...and took a star from him "just for show",

since they were before a man in a suit.

Check.

Why?

Set.

If he noticed at this time...

Open.

When I knew I was coming onboard, I practised hard.

How to place two cards back-to-back perfectly,

displaying one side to the opponent and using the other.

I was clever, wasn't I?

Right! See you later.

Thanks for the treat.

W-Wait!

What's going on here?

Are you still dreaming?

I told you.

The stars are worth a few million each.

Unless you grasp the situation quickly and move accordingly,

you will go through hell.

But it might already be too late.

Funai...

20 minutes after the game began,

Kaiji was cheated of two stars that were worth his life.

Funai!

FUNAI! You tricked me!

Give them back! My... My stars!

Hey! What are you doing?

- Give them back! - Let go!

What are you two doing?

Stop this!

- Get back. - Funai!

Calm down. What's the matter?

This scum, he...!

He went back on his word about drawing!

You fool!

What are you to me?!

You thought we were friends after a five-minute chat?

Don't be naive!

I have just preyed and fed on you!

That's all, fool!

Don't make a scene, trash maggot!

What?!

Stop this.

If you keep acting like this, you'll be ejected.

You too. Scram!

Like he said, there's no problem here.

This is where you guys bet the remainder of your lives.

In other words, a warzone.

Which soldier makes a fuss and cries...

...after getting shot from behind in a war?

You have just been stabbed from the back.

It's as simple as that.

Get lost.

Darn it!

Why did I trust him?!

Despite knowing the importance of this game,

why didn't I think for myself?!

Why didn't I decide for myself?

Why did I let others...

...decide my fate on my behalf?!

Regret was not enough to describe his pain.

It's regret that rips one's soul apart.

But thinking about it, Kaiji realised that...

...it wasn't the first time he went through this.

Though the previous blows were not as bad,

[Schools Attended]

he'd left his life's major decisions up to others,

and merely went with the flow.

That weakness showed in such a place as this.

There's no help for a fool like me...

There's no reason for me to be saved!

Leave it to me. Just do as I say.

This is a perfect winning technique.

Really?

Of course.

Fool! There's no such thing!

It's obvious that he's deceiving you.

But looking at this old fogey...

It's his own fault for not thinking for himself.

The idiots on this ship are the first to die.

Huh?

That guy!

A year ago, he made Kaiji stand guarantee for his loan.

Furuhata was the reason why Kaiji was forced onto this ship!

That idiot!

Has he also fallen into this pit?

I won't let him off!

The room Furuhata went into was the break room.

An oasis to escape from the battlefield...

...and to calm oneself.

But now, it was...

A mess!

People doomed to failure, holding their heads in frustration.

A room of despair.

Furuhata was one of them.

He had four cards and one star left.

Even though Kaiji was better off,

he was also in a whirlpool of despair.

Come here, Furuhata!

K-Kaiji!

- I...I'm sorry! - That's enough!

Let's get out of here!

If you stay in there, you'll rot away.

I was the same way a while ago,

so I can't talk big, but...

Those guys aren't looking for possibilities at all.

They're shutting out what little chance they have to win.

But it's no use...

If you think of losing the next round...

Hey Furuhata, why don't we work together?

Let's get six stars between the two of us.

Both of us?

How much did you borrow just now?

2 million...

I have 10 million.

2 million isn't enough,

but 10 million would buy us enough stars.

If we cooperate using your remaining cards and my money...

Wait!

Stars!

Stars?

Let's go back and search that room!

For a guy with two stars and no cards!

Kaiji!

Over there.

As if Kaiji was fated to meet this man, there he was.

His name is Ando.

Two stars and no cards.

A man in a different kind of despair from Kaiji's.

Listen.

Forget about thinking about yourself as one.

Think of three as one.

A unit of three persons.

Three persons, linked by one destiny.

Their total was 1.4 billion.

They had four stars and five cards.

The cards consisted of four Scissors and one Paper.

It's a worst possible scenario but let's get nine stars somehow!

Yes!

And in this way, the weak united together to survive.

The three moved forward,

helping to compensate for each other's weakness.

Next, Game.
