Jonathan Mark Buckland (born 11 September 1977) is a British musician, songwriter, and the lead guitarist of alternative rock band Coldplay, which he co-founded alongside Chris Martin.[2][3]

Early life and education

Buckland was born on 11 September 1977 in Islington, London. He lived there until the age of four, when his family moved to Pantymwyn, near Mold, Flintshire, Wales.[4] When he was eleven years old, he was in the Scouts. In 2008, he told that one night, around that time, he played in a field with some friends and they had an encounter with an angry sheep and that because of that, he hasn't worn wool or eaten lamb since then.[5] Buckland also said that he "still likes the uniform", referring to his preference for short-sleeved shirts. He was a student at Ysgol y Waun and Alun School, with the latter being located in the Welsh town of Mold. In 2019, he mentioned having a holiday job at north Wales' Daily Post newspaper.[6]

Career

Coldplay

He started an astronomy and mathematics degree at University College London (UCL) in 1996, meeting Chris Martin during their orientation week.[7] The pair spent the rest of the year planning a band, ultimately forming a group called Pectoralz.[8] Classmate Guy Berryman later joined them and in 1997 they renamed themselves Starfish, performing gigs for local Camden promoters at small clubs.[9] Martin then recruited his longtime friend Phil Harvey, who was studying classics at the University of Oxford, to be their manager.[10] The line-up was completed by Will Champion, who took the percussion duties. They eventually changed their name to Coldplay and initially rehearsed on Buckland's bedroom in a flat, with neighbors who were able to tolerate the noise.[11][12]

Other projects

Buckland has guest starred on Ian McCulloch's solo album Slideling by playing in the tracks "Sliding" and "Arthur". He also made a cameo appearance alongside Martin in the 2004 horror comedy film Shaun of the Dead.

Guitar style

He started to play the guitar inspired by The Stone Roses, Ride, George Harrison, U2, My Bloody Valentine and received encouragement from his older brother Tim.[4] Being noted for his sparse arrangements and use of slide bar, Buckland also has a stylistic chiming and ringing sound that led to some comparisons with U2's The Edge.[13][14] His guitar-playing has in turn inspired many other bands to adopt a similar technique, such as The Fray's Joe King, The Killers' David Keuning, and Pat Monahan from Train on some songs.

The Edge himself stated in an interview at Glastonbury: "[Jonny Buckland] is an inspiration to guitar players everywhere, and I am proud to know that I was one of his main influences. (laughs) It makes me feel like a real rock star". Buckland largely uses the Telecaster Thinline 72' as his main electric guitar, as seen mainly in the albums X&Y, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, and Mylo Xyloto. Buckland uses the Fender Stratocaster for his secondary guitar, but he has made clear that the Telecaster series is his favorite. During some concerts, he has used a glass slide.[citation needed]

Personal life

Buckland is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur.[15] He was a vegetarian for some time, but eventually gave up after spending some time in Japan and, after not being able to communicate that he didn't eat meat, was served beef and found that he really liked it.[16] Buckland's brother Tim along with his band The Domino State supported Coldplay at the O2 in December 2008.[17] He married Chloe Evans in 2009; the pair already had a daughter, Violet, born in May 2007. Their son Jonah was born in November 2011. Buckland is one of the godfathers to Chris Martin's daughter Apple.[18] His family primarily resides in London’s Belsize Park area but they also own two apartments in New York City.[19][20] According to an article released by The Times in May 2021, Buckland has an estimated wealth of £107 million.[21]
