Did you know that most people in the world are proficient in 2 languages or more? Those who use 2 languages are considered bilingual. Individuals who use one language are considered monolingual. Many people assume that being bilingual is challenging. How is it possible to acquire 2 languages? Don't fret! Research shows advantages of Bilingualism. Cool! Bilingual show better working memory, larger vocabulary that they are exposed to, and great interaction with people using two languages. If you feel that your deaf child has language confusion between ASL and English, do not worry. Research shows when you deaf child is reading there is English language activity in the brain. Also, ASL language activity in the brain is present too. In short, when learning, there is no language confusion or delay associated with bilingualism. Now, If you feel that providing bilingualism is a logical choice, remember that bilingualism has many benifits and success for your deaf child's future in the academic, social, and in their lives.
