Thomas Jefferson once said "The Missouri State Capitol, overlooking the Missouri River, is a beautiful site to behold. I'm proud to lend my name to this historic community." Before Missouri was granted statehood in 1821, Missouri's first legislators met in the buildings of the first Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles, the first capital of Missouri and temporary location until Jefferson City's incorporation in 1825. The capitol building in Jefferson City resembles our nation's capitol. Take a free guided tour of the state capitol building and see where the House and Senate meet when they are in session. A must see on the tour is Missouri Native Thomas Hart Benton's mural, "A Social History of Missouri" in the Third Floor House Lounge. Near the capitol, visitors can see the rare surviving Missouri River Landing at the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, the Lewis and Clark Memorial and the Governor's Mansion, built in 1871. History continues at Lincoln University, founded in 1866 by black soldiers from the Civil War. Hear stories of escape attempts made by inmates on a tour at one of the largest prisons west of the Mississippi and built 100 years before Alcatraz at the Missouri State Penitentiary.
