Shizue Hyoudou Zembei, Master of Yukawaro ... Jun Arai Ryuuichi, his son ... Ryouichi Takenaka A Film by Heinosuke Gosho Sir, what's happened? A woman ran away. She's a geisha at Yukawa-ro. Didn't you see her? Then she must have gone by the road. I don't know what kind of girl she is, but I feel sorry for her.... They'll catch her around Shuuzenji temple. Mr. Kubota, it's been a long time since I saw you last. I guess Yukawa-ro has become rich enough to have its own geisha. Since our mine became successful, things are booming now. If only you had stayed longer. It's too bad for you. I hear many engineers are looking for more mines around here. I guess you're one of them. It's one way to make money, though - My way is not to run around seeking another mine. That's the one who was at the Yukawa-ro mine - he's well-known as a pushy slave-driver. As we are honest, we couldn't avoid paying our debts, like she did. We're all nice here, I don't understand at all why she didn't like such a good house. I think she met a man. I remember she was flirting with someone. Kisaku, come here. Go to the police station and ask them not to bother that woman. You want them to leave such an ungrateful woman alone? I reported her because I was afraid she was cheated by a crook.... The way things are exaggerated, people would think I'm stingy. That's not good. And it wouldn't be nice if our customers heard about this. Beggars and traveling actors are not allowed to enter. Young Men's Association of Minosaku Village. Hold on, brother! What did you do to that notice! It had fallen down. Liar! You must have knocked it down. It was already fallen over... You must have done it. Come to the office! Must you insist on saying I did it? It's your fault. It really had fallen down before we came. I never lie. Did you see him knock it down? I saw it. It was not this man, but the shakuhachi player who came by earlier. You shouldn't have used force without evidence. You should apologize. Why do that? I told the truth just like I learned in civics class! We keep traveling from spring to autumn, and when winter comes we go back to Ooshima over Amagi. Don't think we're carefree travelers, though, when we see those notices we feel desolate. If we made an honest living, from the mine we've had since my father's day, we wouldn't be so... Stop it, brother. I don't like to see my sister doing this work.... But that's life. Did you meet a woman in the street, age 25 or 26, who looks like a geisha? What is your name? This is my wife, Chiyoko. You've become so thin I didn't recognize you. That's understandable. We had a baby prematurely on the road. They've come to ask us to stop searching for the runaway geisha. Yukawa-ro asked us. Since I asked them to stop searching... You're so surly even though I've been gone a long time! I don't want to act nice. I hate talking to you. How cruel. I have no business with you. The master is home, isn't he? If he were home, he wouldn't see you. Master, Kubota the engineer has returned. He wanted to see you, but I think it's better if you don't see him.... He's here. It must not be on good business. You, see him instead. Young master, he is an incorrigible traveler. Take care. Please excuse me for my long silence... How is your father? He is very busy lately so I'm meeting you instead. It's very good you are busy. I've heard you're doing well. How nice... Not so much. Young master, how are your studies? I'm the son of a hot-spring innkeeper. I'm not likely to go to the university. Did you quit? While I was thinking of quitting, I graduated. By the way, what is your business? I'd like to have my reward. It was I, Kubota, who guaranteed this place would be a good mine, when your father tried to buy it. I humbly tell you, that without my advice, you might not have been so successful. Wait. That much is true. But when my father had financial troubles, you ran away. You've come now for a reward as if it were your own... You are too selfish. Now that your mine is successful, it's time to give rewards. You bought it at a giveaway price, and now it's become a great hit. Don't you owe this success to me? You must not know the law. So keep in mind, that kind of request is called blackmail. Blackmail? How can you be so rude! You're green, you can't understand. Call your father! - It seems they're getting clamorous. - Is he all right? I will go. There are still some men on my side at the mine. I could make trouble for you. What an absurd man! I will shoot you down unless you go out now! If you want to shoot me, do it! Don't think I'm doing this under duress, but you can go and take this with you! I'll take it as train fare. Old man, you can't even hit a pig. He says he would like to go with us till Shimoda. Although we're humble, you might be less bored traveling with us. It would be nice if he came to Ooshima. I am a floating weed, I spend my youth in traveling. In every waking moment, flowers of love and sympathy bloom. Business seems to be good as usual in this town. We might have a job tonight. We have arranged an inn for you. Let's go. Am I in another inn? It's not suitable for you here. Yuri, I'll take it. That student looks so nice. The students who come to Ooshima have strangely long hair. But his hair is nice. See you later. Is there a barbershop around here? Are you all together? Please come here later. Why do you look so pleased? That was my childhood friend.... I'll see him later. Are you jealous? Jealous? Stop it! That dancer's brother, Eikichi, lives a fast life. He lost his whole inheritance from his father. People say, "Accomplishments are a lifelong benefit to their possessor." Still, I feel sorry for his sister. It's dangerous to be curious and go along with such travelers. Kaizu-ya Haberdashery It seems a lot of people come here. It's a Gold Rush. Since I finished my exams, I've come here to visit the whole Izu area. You should stay at my place... I couldn't dream of it. Anyway, visit me. Powder and rouge on cheeks, Always hearing the shamisen notes, Tired from dancing and living in tears. Distant lights in Shimoda harbour. How merry our neighbors are. Will you play Go with me? Next time I'll play and you sing something. What a bad shamisen this is. What can you sing? Kouta or Kiyomoto? Well, sir, unlike you, we're amateurs... What's wrong with being an amateur? Then I'll put on a show. Isami Kondo, as played by Sawashou. No, no. Sawashou is nothing like a grasshopper. Stop it! Did you call them just to bully them? If you're doing it for fun, don't act so nastily. If you behave like a cad, I'll give you no mercy. You don't have to take such an offer. Better to quit now and get your money. We haven't seen you in a long time. You have been staying here, haven't you? You've become a fine girl. I guess you sometimes have such troubles in your travels. That's how it is in this line of work. Now I feel really sorry for you. By the way, I have something to tell you... Go back to the inn now. How do you feel now that the mine at Yukawa-ro is so successful? I feel it was regrettable, but I was just unlucky. As it was... Suppose they knew the value of that mine when you sold it at a giveaway price....? I'm sure, because I'm the one who investigated that mine. The master of Yukawa-ro is a deceptive man. I'd like to have seen the bully defeated. It was really pleasing. I am going to Yukawa-ro. Yukawa-ro? For what reason? I'm going to negotiate. I was deceived. Looking for girls? I guess that engineer Kubota egged you into coming here. This is also a matter of my credit. I will see you when you are sober. I'm not drunk. Let's settle it now. If you need money, don't make up some pretext - just bring your sister here. My sister? What will you do for Kaoru? Will you make her your geisha? That's none of your business. If you understand, go back. I had the most annoying experience tonight. Please come with me and hear my story. Kaoru, please go to Yukawa-ro. There's nothing else for it. You must go there and become their geisha. They deceived me about that mine, and now, when I went to negotiate, they wanted you. There's not much difference between being a traveling actress and a geisha. Would you put up with it and go there for me? Brother, do you need money? I'd like to avenge myself on him. With the money I get from him, I'd like to find a new mine and put him to shame. I don't want to go. I can endure my work because I'm with you. If I have to be alone, I'd rather go work in Tokyo. I'll ask him to let me go. You think you can find another mine? First, I don't believe this man Kubota. You want me to bear this silently? Listen, you can't exchange your sister for money. You mustn't treat this emotionally. Think it over. When Amagi becomes cloudy the rain sparkles. In the current of the waves offshore, the memories gradually disappear. Autumn winds blow away the scent of spring. I'm just walking. How is your brother? He's depressed. He's really timid, but when he's drunk he becomes bad. You said you'd rather go to Tokyo. If something unpleasant happens, please tell me. I'll gladly help you as much as possible. I... I'm glad. Glad. Please let me know when you leave. Here comes the student who knows the young master. My son is at the hut now, but he'll come back soon. You, fetch Ryuuichi. I'd rather talk to you. It's an urgent matter, and it may be bold of me. It's about the traveler Eikichi. I don't think you deceived him about the success of that mine - but - when he came last night, I heard you demanded his sister. You might think me impertinent, but I've come here for an explanation. Certainly money talks, but is it good? Don't you feel sorry for that traveling actor who had to buy his sister with the money from the mine he sold? Since you've heard the story only from him, it seems understandable you'd think like that. I was friendly with their father. I have some sympathy for them. This is a bankbook in his sister's name. There's a payment here from the mine. I told him to bring his sister because I'd like to take her into my home. You should know, Eikichi is a good person, but he cannot live carefully when he has money. These are private bonds between us when he would ask for money. I expect someday he will reform while on the road, but for now I must give him a cold reception. I understand now. But if something happened to her while she is traveling, all your effort would be in vain. I've thought of it. There is a woman named Yuriko among them. I asked her secretly. Someday Eikichi will understand. Then all will be well. Because I would like to arrange for her to be married to my son. To be Ryuuichi's wife? Come to my room. Did you take a spring bath? Or will you swim with me in the pool? Shall we go through this road? When I said I liked you, I had to consider my sisters.... But....I cannot refuse because I like you. Distance to Shimoda-cho: 1 ri and 20 cho. Why were you walking so fast? Many students come to Ooshima from Tokyo in the summer. I will visit Tokyo. If you could live where you were born and grew up, you'd be happiest. Shimoda harbor. It brings nostalgia and homesickness for those who travel among the spring towns of Izu and Sagami. If we part now, when we will meet again. How many springs will pass, under the olive flowers, before we can talk again. Shall I show you famous places in Shimoda? There is a movie theatre. She likes movies. She insists you ask to take her there with you. Frankly speaking, I'm going back on the next ship. To Tokyo? Isn't this sudden? If any of us have done something to make you angry... I have to study... I don't mean to keep you, but would you stay with us just one more day? Fool. Don't cry. He will be sure to come again next summer vacation. She was looking forward to bringing you to our house in Ooshima. All my dreams are scattered. I am a wandering bird in tears. Don't cry. Don't cry. Crying won't bring back yesterday. Since we've become so friendly, I feel so sorry we must say goodbye this suddenly. I'll give this to you. Please wear it. We still have some time, but I'll go and buy a ticket. For a souvenir, could you give me your comb? Next summer, please visit us in Ooshima. I'd like to come, but I can't promise. Will you allow me to write you? But....can't I? I'm asking you a favor. Although I've only spent a little time traveling with you, I believe you'll accept my request. I ask that you have a stable life again. You shouldn't rust away in this traveling life. Happiness is waiting for you. Happiness? What do you mean? Please tell me. It seems your brother misunderstood the master of Yukawa-ro. But he was wrong. I went to Yukawa-ro and I'm convinced he's waiting for the time your brother will live a steady life again. When that day comes, you will be married off to the master's son. Is that what you mean by 'happiness'? I... All the hopes in my heart have collapsed. I... It's not only for you. It's also good for your brother. Promise me. Keep it secret and help your brother find a steady life. I like you very much - I love you. I brought persimmons, they prevent seasickness... I'm sure she loved that student. The End
