Iran and Zimbabwe established diplomatic relations on 11 February 1983.[1] Despite very few cultural ties, the two countries maintain extremely strong relations. Iran maintains an embassy in Harare. Zimbabwe maintains an embassy in Tehran.
History
There are growing economic, social and cultural ties between Iran and Zimbabwe. Relations between Iran and Zimbabwe started in 1979 when the late Vice President Simon Muzenda visited Tehran to meet leaders of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.[2] Zimbabwe opened an embassy in Tehran in 2003.[3]
In 2005 President Mugabe confirmed the formal engagement of Iran in bilateral relations during the State visit to Zimbabwe by Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. In 2009 President Mugabe in a state TV address confirmed his support for the Iranian nuclear program and the shared struggle against "demagogues and international dictators."[4]
On April 22, 2010, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Zimbabwe.[5] Zimbabwean state media said Ahmadinejad’s visit was part of a drive to strengthen ties between countries at odds with the West.
In 2022, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, First Lady of Zimbabwe, visited Iran, focusing on philanthropic work: she spoke of the shared experience of the two countries: "I appreciate the cordial relations that exist between the two countries, Zimbabwe and Iran. We are both victims of illegal sanctions [sic] therefore, we should learn from each other’s experiences”.[6]
Zimbabwe has consistently voted against condemning Iran at the United Nations.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
Both countries have supported the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.[13][14]
