The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge (Chinese: 花江峡谷大桥), is a suspension bridge under construction, expected to be inaugurated in June 2025. Being 2,890 metres (1.80 mi) long, it crosses the Beipan River in the Guizhou province, China. Upon completion, it will be the world's highest bridge, with a designed height of 625 meters from the bottom of the gorge to the bridge deck, taking the position from the Duge Bridge.
Project
Among the reasons for the construction of the bridge were: the revitalization of a very rural region, and the promotion of tourism, with the projected creation of a center for extreme sports at the bottom of the canyon. The canyon crossing time, which is currently 70 minutes, will be reduced to just over one minute.[1][2]
Construction
The construction began in 2021. In April 2023, the first tower of the suspended part reached 199 meters in height and the construction of the upper transverse beam has begun.[1]
The inauguration is planned for 2025.[1]
Characteristics
Upon completion, the bridge is planned to measure a total length of 2,890 meters, including a main span of 1,420 meters, supported by two 262-meter-high towers. The bridge crosses the Beipan River as it passes through the deep Huajiang Canyon. As a result, the difference in altitude between the future deck and the water level of the river reaches 625 meters, which would constitute a world record.[2][3]
The bridge will carry the highway connecting Liuzhi Special District and Anlong Special District.[4]
