They heard a sound that Jesus study, but they couldn't identify the sound that missed it They even heard the sound of John the Baptist they heard the voice crying out, but they they couldn't get it You must hear the sound of the spirit you must hear the voice of God saying come to me You must hear him. You must hear the sound of heaven drawing you you must hear the sound of his presence He's got to get to that place where nothing matters but the voice the sound you must get there It must drown out all else in your life miss all the cares all of your other desires all of your passions Everything else has to be has to be brought down to a level where the loudest thing you hear is his voice saying come come come As you bring forth the sound of heaven the Lord says I will begin to fill the atmosphere And it will be not what you say. It will be who you are You will no longer wonder what it means Not to be able to minister or move because of the lady presence. You will know my lady presences You will know my glory You must ask him to come you must create an atmosphere for his spirit You must give him worth It was fire him above your next breath You must ask him to come He was cry out until the sound of heaven Reaches earth. He was cry out and to your voices are one with his he was cry. He was crying He was cry out for ch Receiving the holy spirit have you received the holy spirit since you believed? Well, you said a man, but I'm I'm I'm probably going to show that maybe you haven't Even though you speak with tongues You may not have received the Holy Spirit And say, where are you going? I'll stay with me God the Holy Spirit is in us and has given us all the resources pertaining to life and godliness And how through the knowledge. It's a knowledge It's not a manifestation in itself, but it's a knowledge through that knowledge We come in to the receiving of the Holy Spirit Now I've claimed to be baptized with the Holy Spirit Since I was eight years old And I would say I've been filled with all this fear He abides in me, and I trust that he will speak to me to you now Yes, I I believe in the baptism. I believe in the filling of the Holy Spirit I believe in the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, but lately I've been asking myself the question Holy Spirit if I truly received you Do I really know who you are and what I have in me? You see you can have something very valuable in your heart and not be able to Understand it. You can't enjoy or Use what you don't understand you have to God once through the script. I just gave you through the knowledge of Him through the understanding God has to turn the lights on so to speak so we know who he is So we know what we have And it's something that we we keep saying when we get in a problem or trouble Oh God Send a sweeping come down Holy Spirit We looking for some power to come down from heaven and sweep away our problems when all along that treasure that powers within us that power is here and we we think we're in a Holy Ghost meeting and people run all over the world to get in what they call a Holy Ghost meeting where they say the fire has fallen in Somewhere the Holy Spirit has come down from some cosmic area And now people are falling and people are manifesting books I believe in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, and I'm not knocking that whatsoever but you see there's a deeper walk with God if you're walking with Jesus you were saved by the Power of the Holy Spirit and he abides in you you don't have to travel anywhere to find him He abides. This is his temple. He is here Shawn the Baptist said to the Pharisees there stands one among you whom you don't know and Jesus said to Philip one of his own disciples have I've been so long with you Philip and yet you have not known me How long have you said you know the Holy Spirit? How long have you said I'm filled with the Holy Spirit And I wonder if the Holy Spirit could say to many of us this morning If I've been with you so long and you don't know who I am There is one in you among you and you still don't know who he is I Wonder if we do not measure up to the believers in Paul's time This seems to be something missing Because during Paul's time especially in Thessalonica People were going through the hardest time of society in his age in his time They were being persecuted they were in incredible Situations they were losing their homes and their goods and they were in trials their homes were being bombarded out of hell And yet they didn't quit In great afflictions, they were encouraged I'm reading to you in 1st Thessalonians, 1:5 and 6 Paul writing to the Thessaloniki Church our gospel came not unto you and word only been in power in the Holy Ghost in much assurance and you became followers of us and of the Lord having received the word in much affliction with joy in the Holy Ghost And Paul says this you became examples to all that believe in Macedonia in a ki. Oh and From you sounded up the testimony of the Lord In every place your faith has been spoken of all around He said you have become a testimony to nations to vast numbers of people Because they know the suffering in Thessalonica. They know what you've been through they know that you're going through the greatest testing of your life and they have heard of your joy in the time of Much affliction and you become a testimony He said you rejoice in the midst of your pain and your much affliction In you could go to that church and everybody said you go there and you're gonna find that Society under great pressure Stress and you're going to find that the pastor is rejoicing you're going to find the people in a congregation rejoicing And this became the testimony The people in a hard time can still have the joy of the Lord Paul said you're the talk of Nations What did they know about the Holy Spirit that we don't know Because never in history have we seen so many believers under affliction? There's never been a time like this And you see Christians in there? Sleeping on dirt floors and when it rains water pouring through their little tin shacks And still see them praising God with the joy of the Holy Ghost Incredible to see how God can take care of his people in those hard times and just even though it's just bare sustenance Still having the joy of the Holy Ghost in their heart knowing and understanding him it's very few knew even in the best of times and I can't come and just preach pity And we can't preach Platitudes where we just say. Oh tomorrow the Sun is going to shine It's not sympathy. It's the Word of God that must come forth. It's something from this book It has to be something of the power of the Holy Spirit in us that we have within us the power and authority to expect anything that hell throws at is anything the devil drill or Society or nature whatever it may be there has to be something from God. There has to be a word from heaven Where it says the Dragon which is the devil gave power to the Beast and that's That that is the ruling entities. That's the government forces and the institutions and special interest groups like could be gay and lesbian coalition and could be Some political group mccann be others that have their own agenda to be forced upon Society but the Bible says the dragon gave power to the beast and the Beast overcame Let me read it clearly and power was given unto him over all Kindred's tongues and Nations power was given to him and The Bible says the Beast overcame them over King and you look at what's happening now In this country and in this nation and around the world many believers are staggered than their faith. Their faith is shipwrecked The beasts the powers you see every institution now is being challenged. The tradition of marriage is challenged you see we're into a time of lawlessness the The beasts power that is arising in sheep. That's where I was coming from because I read this power to make war Against the Saints and overcome them power to make war to test and try the elect the Bible says they will come to try even the elect of God to deceive it were possible even the elect and I read these words of medicine the mad dragon so in other words Satan empowering wicked governments possessing wicked special interest groups an Outright war to shipwreck the faith of people who are being tested It can't be denied the devil has sole cause questioning among some believers they look at the hopelessness of their condition few human eyes and They said what's the use of they've given up? They're no longer. They say it's too much of a struggle I don't want to go on like this anymore and their faith has been shipwrecked Now Jesus spoke of an hour of power and the rulers of darkness For for the rulers of darkness when they took him captive and Gethsemane, this is what he said This hour and the power of Darkness is yours just before The Crofts just before the light break forth. They that set in darkness saw great lights That was when Jesus came out of the grave and he dispelled the darkness But jesus said this hour this last hour belongs to you the powers of darkness There's an hour of darkness given to the rulers. God has allowed This final test to the Jewish nation and even to the Gentiles who believed him Will you believe in the hour of darkness? Will you believe? That I'm sending you jesus said the Holy Ghost. I'm not going to be here, but my spirit will be with you I will not be just in Jerusalem. I will not be just in Judea in Israel I'll be all over the world and I'll be abiding in the hearts and the lives of all who trust me No Beloved we are facing now Satan's last hour of power Both in Daniel revelation were warned in the last days of your gross darkness that will cover the earth and for a short season for a short season Is going to look like the devil is winning on all fronts. Now, you stopped them. Think about it If you are true believer your heart dreams when you see how fast this nation is spinning into chaos the immorality television to become a filthy cesspool the movies The theater here on this cross the street what's playing next-door wicked? That's the that's the name of wicked the boasting the pride coming against everything that has held this society together for centuries Falling left and right on all sides being challenged by these evil forces the Beast spirit that Sun loosed from the earth today is going to seem like The devil has even defeated many in the church in fact So many thousands of Christians on our mailing list some are here visiting us today You're on our mailing list you get our messages and the number one complaint is I can't find a church that has life I can't find a church where there's any fire of the Holy Spirit I talked to a couple recently godly couple and they've just moved to another cities that we've tried at least 25 churches, we couldn't find one where the word of the Lord was coming forth with conviction. There was no fire There was no anointing it was dead. And when you see this happen, I see it all over the world Absolute death to discouragement and you look at mizzou. It looks like the devil is women It looks like he's going to have his day. Well folks That's all he gets he gets a short time a Mad Devils come down. They're mad because he has such a short time That's what the Bible says and he's throwing everything out of hell, but folks God foresaw these days God for solved these days before the world was formed then he had a plan in place He had a plan God wasn't taken by surprise by all this wickedness. Not at all and folks This is the full point of my message this morning And I want you to hear God had a plan that you and I would not only survive but we'd be more than overcomers No matter how wicked the world became No matter what the devil would bring on society We would have witness what the Bible says a power that is greater than he that's in the world. He that's in you Who is he that is in you the Holy Spirit is in you He that is in us is greater than he that is in the world When you go to the book of Revelation to read about what is coming in last day you read about beasts You read about dragon you read about Horned beasts you hear about Antichrist to hear about mark of the beast. You hear of all of these images and creatures Yes, they have a meaning but let me tell you something You don't have to know the meaning of all these beasts then all of these things that are happening You don't have to fear the Antichrist. You don't have to fear the mark of the beast You don't have to fear any of that because no matter when Jesus comes and I believe he can come at any moment That no matter what? God says I have given you and you have abiding you every resource every power everything that you need What about these afflictions in hard times Let me tell you this the power of the Holy Spirit is not released in us until We take him as our burden bearer Now say it again. This is the heart of my message You have not fully received the Holy Spirit Until you allow him to do what he was sent to do If not fully received him and maybe abiding in you But you can ignore the holy spirit you can go on. What is it? Don't tell me we've received the Holy Spirit when? We've been told to cast every burden on him that he is our burden bear and that's why Jesus Christ sent him The father sent him through the son if the Holy Ghost abides in us It's not just manifestations it's this quiet ever-increasing knowledge If I turn every problem every burden over to the Holy Spirit I'm receiving him. I'm allowing him to do what he was called to do I'm receiving him we say well the Holy Spirit has been sent to empower us to be witnesses True, but what is the witness? The witness is not just talking about Jesus to the center. That's that scriptural that's necessary It's more than getting your Bible out and trying to lead people to salvation through the word about that's true That's that's scriptural. And that's what we're called to do, but folks there's more to it than that the the receiving of the Holy Spirit The real witness is the believer who all around them know that there's overwhelming Problems in trouble and yet they see the joy of the Lord. They see a peace. They see a secret There's something coming out of that life. You see a long face and a downcast look is not a testimony People got around murmuring and complaining and talking about their problems to everybody That's not the testimony to a lost world. The testimony to the lost world is somebody approaching and they know what you're going through They know that you suffer They know that there's pain and they know that and they find you encouraging them Then you there's something of a hidden joy There's something breaking out at you that they don't understand and they're going to ask you what your source is They're going to ask you where the power comes from then you begin to witness And there's not one in this place That's not going through something of a trial Paul spoke of having the sentence of death upon him But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves been in God who raises the dead and in the original Greek He said we had a response of death, but Paul was going through one situation We said when I look at this and I look into the future My only response is the only way out of this that I die go to heaven that I'm at the end I have a sentence of death on me I don't see any human way out of this of the sentence of death on me and some of you know what I'm talking about God put this burning in my soul That there be those that are sitting here right now That you are in a situation that's unlike anything you've ever been through in your life And hear it from the Holy Spirit you look at it from every angle you Figure every way you can figure but you finally come to conclusion. There's no way out yes and even a desire Lord, I Can't handle this anymore. Take me home Press down beyond strength. Even the great pasal. Paul said I just wanted a Sentence of death the only response I have now Humanly speaking. I don't see any way out You see God allowed this in Paul's life to literally force him to never trust in his flesh Never trust any human way out but to cast himself completely on the power of the Holy Spirit Folks God sometimes allows things in our lives and he allows it in those who walk closest to his heart Whom the Lord loves he chastens and we can't see it often He's one of the greatest evidence of the love of God for us But he says I want to raise up in you and through you testimony the spirit and those who have given up trying it you see you haven't Received the Holy Spirit till he's in full control. Meh. Say it again. I have not Received the Holy Ghost at his fullness until he's in control until I listen I Go to the Holy Ghost and I name every burden I have I name every crisis I'm in and I name it's a heritage Holy Spirit. It's written that there's Indy If I turn this over to you and do it turn this over. I'm not going to lose sleep over this I don't care what it is. I turn it over to you right now. Holy Spirit and you start naming them You start laying them down one after another to say Jesus Lord. I can't handle this Just be on As I've said so many times in this poll, but the evidence of faith trust is rest When you're able to look it in the eye, so all right. If I die in the process I get glory I Go directly to the heart of Jesus. I'm gonna trust you. Even if I did this ends up that the solution is praise the Lord Paul trusted in the spirit and God Answered now God is not going to leave you the rest of your life where you're at Paul the Apostle says I trusted the holy spirit. There was no way out that I trusted the holy spirit and he Gave me a way out. He delivered me and I am now Evidently another struggle. He said now I am being in I'm in the process of being delivered again, and he said no matter what I face the other I went down to the road I believe I can be delivered by trusting in the Holy Spirit in the power of the Holy Ghost How many times has he delivered you how many times as he brought you out? you see the The issues not just saying well the devil is after me. Yes, the devil does these things but sometimes God allows the persecution God allows seasons of affliction He allows these overwhelming things because he has no place else to go to find the testimony He has no other place to go But those who've walked close to him Where's he going to find it majority of those who walk a distance from here or colder back slidden? No matter what happens. Nobody god allowed little life They turn bitter but God knows better about you and I hope he knows better about me that no matter what comes No matter what a face, and I don't know what's ahead for me You don't know what's ahead for you, but there has to be this confidence of God We're not looking to the devil to get discouraged that he has the power No, no, the Bible says that God's in control of all things God has all the power God has all the authority My message to you this morning is get your eyes off of conditions Say everything's going down. Yes, there'll be judgment But even when times of judgment God says I will deliver my people in That dark out folks. We're we're not in darkness. We've seen the light and That's what we need. Now the revelation that I'm asking the Holy Spirit Oh Holy Spirit Be my friend Let me talk to you Hey closer than my wife be closer. That might you'll be closer than anyone I know on this earth and all the way spirit let me know and settled this issue once and for all But you care that You've been sent to bear all my burdens and I want to receive you in your fullest obvious fulness We've all received the scripture says as always we've all received now say one nice thing in closing Take it as this and fatherly counsel If you're gonna let the Holy Ghost be in charge, you're gonna have to be ready for changes God sent messengers into southern Gomorrah Lot, and his wife opened up their home and received these men these men had the power to deliver them It was a time of judgment pending judgment impending judgment and God said deliverance But you see Lot's wife Resented them. I'm sure of being there because he's talking about changing everything. He's talking about you may have to lose everything Now you may have changed all your plans This is what you see this is with you, but you won here and I'm sure Lot's wife and spraying all I'm trusting God I have was a great God. He's going to just he gonna either delay judgment He's going to work a miracle for me. I'm staying right here And the angel Lord said no, if you go let God be in control, you're gonna give the reins you're gonna be delivered But you're gonna have to be willing To go another way, you're gonna have to leave your plans and if I pull your and if your wait on the Holy Ghost He'll tell you what those plans are. The angel told him clearly said we're gonna have to get you out of this city You're going to have to give up this house. You're gonna have to do this. You see God if you're gonna hold on Say well this is the plan is what I feel is right You're gonna be in turmoil and when things don't happen the way you think they should happen And you're gonna dig in and say whatever I'm goal this way You've not received the Holy Spirit because receiving the Holy Spirit is saying when we spirit, whatever You You know the way you lead and I'll follow and if you wait on the Lord, he'll give you that direction He'll tell you the way This to go but many of you have not seen deliverance ship because you're holding on to your plans Not willing to let the Holy Ghost lead and guide you Now they had to literally take them by the hand and drag them out of that city, but they were no danger They were gonna be safe God we're gonna feed and clothe and take care of But the Lord says you have to let me in control and folks in the days of judgment ahead We're gonna have to be willing to let God make all kinds of changes in our life and say Lord I'm not going to fret about it. I'm not going to try to plan out into the future the future is yours Does this make any sense to you at all? Please stand please Now I know Because the Holy Spirit's told me That their numbers here in this place this morning you're here in Time Square Church And day by day recently It's become darker darker And more unsettled and you're going through the time of your life You don't know what it is it's between you and the Lord But God told me to comfort you and bring you hope Get your eyes off of the devil Get your eyes off the beast condition. It's in the land today No afraid about politics. Don't fret about any of this keep your eyes on the Lord Asked the Holy Spirit to take full control of your life God has a way. Yes, he does He's going to deliver you This is not going to go on this nightmare is going to end God has ended every nightmare I've been through and you know, I I have hope for the future because even though there may be a nightmare tomorrow. I Have it I have a history with the Lord. I've seen his living hand folk You've got to look back and say I was in this mess and God deliver me. I was in this trial He delivered me God's been good. God has been faithful I Talk to you just a moment ago about The two angels that came to deliver Locke he'd even though they received him into the home They hadn't received him in the purpose for which they were sent and there's not full reception until that happens Now in that day they had to drag them out They had to work against their will and literally took him by the hand dragged them out of the city Now in the dispensation the Holy Spirit, he doesn't work that way he will not drag you into a place of faith and confidence and Unbelief of Borch what the Holy Spirit he cannot he will not work with us unbelief and fear And so you're gonna have to ask Lord. Forgive me of my unbelief. Holy Spirit forgive me. The Holy Spirit is the one who Gives us power over sin power overdose You say well, how do I believe well, how did you believe to get saved? And then how did you believe that Christ come into your heart that same simple faith Holy Spirit? I commit myself to a life of dependence. Oh, yeah I'm going to depend on you. I'm gonna talk to you. Have you been talking to the Holy Spirit? Wherever you go, you know that New York, you can talk out loud anywhere You can talk to Jesus anywhere no one will look at you And Those from Alabama will see another crazy in New Yorker you Can I'm not being facetious? I'm telling you talk to him All hours of the day get up in the middle night if you have to and your burden said Holy Ghost I can't handle this take it helped me here with my comforter. I believe that and trust that he will comfort your heart He will come and be your guide I Want you to repeat this with me the Holy Ghost is my burden barrier again, the Holy Ghost Is my burden bearer? So I give him all my burdens Raise your hands. P'raps it right out loud, Lord, Jesus Thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit Thank you for cleansing me. I Give you my sins my doubt and unbelief Thank you the Holy Spirit, holy spirit I give you the range of my life I put you in charge And I can't still my burdens on you Right now now give him thanks for answering you've all right. Thank you Jesus

Etymology

The word spirit (from the Latin spiritus meaning "breath") appears either alone or with other words, in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and the New Testament. Combinations include expressions such as the "Holy Spirit", "Spirit of God", and in Christianity, "Spirit of Christ".[3]

The word spirit is rendered as רוּחַ (ruach) in Hebrew-language parts of the Old Testament.[4] In its Aramaic parts, the term is rûacḥ.[5] The Greek translation of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, translates the word as πνεῦμα (pneuma).[4] This is the same word that is used throughout the New Testament, written originally in Greek.[6]

The English term spirit comes from its Latin origin, spiritus, which is how the Vulgate translates both the Old and New Testament concept.[7] The alternative term, "Holy Ghost", comes from Old English translations of spiritus.[8]

Comparative religion

The Hebrew Bible contains the term "spirit of God" (ruach hakodesh) in the sense of the might of a unitary God. This meaning is different from the Christian concept of "Holy Spirit" as one personality of God in the Trinity.[9]

The Christian concept tends to emphasize the moral aspect of the Holy Spirit more than Judaism, evident in the epithet Holy Spirit that appeared in Jewish religious writings only relatively late but was a common expression in the Christian New Testament.[10]

According to theologian Rudolf Bultmann, there are two ways to think about the Holy Spirit: "animistic" and "dynamistic". In animistic thinking, it is "an independent agent, a personal power which like a demon can fall upon a man and take possession of him, enabling him or compelling him to perform manifestations of power" while in dynamistic thought it "appears as an impersonal force which fills a man like a fluid".[11] Both kinds of thought appear in Jewish and Christian scripture, but animistic is more typical of the Old Testament whereas dynamistic is more common in the New Testament.[12] The distinction coincides with the Holy Spirit as either a temporary or permanent gift. In the Old Testament and Jewish thought, it is primarily temporary with a specific situation or task in mind, whereas in the Christian concept the gift resides in man permanently.[13]

On the surface, the Holy Spirit appears to have an equivalent in non-Abrahamic Hellenistic mystery religions. These religions included a distinction between the spirit and psyche, which is also seen in the Pauline epistles. According to proponents of the History of religions school, the Christian concept of the Holy Spirit cannot be explained from Jewish ideas alone without reference to the Hellenistic religions.[14] However, according to theologian Erik Konsmo, the views "are so dissimilar that the only legitimate connection one can make is with the Greek term πνεῦμα [pneuma, Spirit] itself".[15]

Another link with ancient Greek thought is the Stoic idea of the spirit as anima mundi—or world soul—that unites all people.[15] Some believe that this can be seen in Paul's formulation of the concept of the Holy Spirit that unites Christians in Jesus Christ and love for one another, but Konsmo again thinks that this position is difficult to maintain.[16] In his Introduction to the 1964 book Meditations, the Anglican priest Maxwell Staniforth wrote:

Another Stoic concept which offered inspiration to the Church was that of 'divine Spirit'. Cleanthes, wishing to give more explicit meaning to Zeno's 'creative fire', had been the first to hit upon the term pneuma, or 'spirit', to describe it. Like fire, this intelligent 'spirit' was imagined as a tenuous substance akin to a current of air or breath, but essentially possessing the quality of warmth; it was immanent in the universe as God, and in man as the soul and life-giving principle. Clearly it is not a long step from this to the 'Holy Spirit' of Christian theology, the 'Lord and Giver of life', visibly manifested as tongues of fire at Pentecost and ever since associated – in the Christian as in the Stoic mind – with the ideas of vital fire and beneficient warmth.[17]

Abrahamic religions

Judaism

The Hebrew language phrase ruach ha-kodesh (Hebrew: רוח הקודש, "holy spirit" also transliterated ruacḥ ha-qodesh) is a term used in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and Jewish writings to refer to the spirit of YHWH (רוח יהוה). It literally means "spirit of the holiness" or "spirit of the holy place". The Hebrew terms ruacḥ qodshəka, "thy holy spirit" (רוּחַ קָדְשְׁךָ), and ruacḥ qodshō, "his holy spirit" (רוּחַ קָדְשׁוֹ) also occur (when a possessive suffix is added the definite article is dropped).[citation needed]

The "Holy Spirit" in Judaism generally refers to the divine aspect of prophecy and wisdom. It also refers to the divine force, quality, and influence of the Most High God, over the universe or over his creatures, in given contexts.[18]

Christianity

For the large majority of Christians, the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost, from Old English gast, "spirit") is a member of the Trinity: The "Triune God" manifested as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; each Person being God.[20][21][22] Two symbols from the New Testament canon are associated with the Holy Spirit in Christian iconography: a winged dove, and tongues of fire.[23][24] Each depiction of the Holy Spirit arose from different historical accounts in the Gospel narratives; the first being at the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River where the Holy Spirit was said to descend in the form of a dove as the voice of God the Father spoke as described in Matthew, Mark, and Luke[25];the second being from the day of Pentecost, fifty days after Pascha where the descent of the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ, as tongues of fire as described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1–31.[26] Called "the unveiled epiphany of God",[27] the Holy Spirit is the One who empowers the followers of Jesus with spiritual gifts[28][29] and power[30][31] that enables the proclamation of Jesus Christ, and the power that brings conviction of faith.

Islam

The Holy Spirit (Arabic: روح القدس Ruh al-Qudus, "the holy spirit") is mentioned four times in the Qur'an,[32] where it acts as an agent of divine action or communication. While there are similarities to the Holy Spirit mentioned in Christian and Jewish sources, it is unclear if these four references[33] refer to the same Holy Spirit. The Muslim interpretation of the Holy Spirit is generally consistent with other interpretations based upon the Old and the New Testaments. On the basis of narrations in certain Hadith some Muslims identify it with the angel Gabriel (Arabic Jibrāʾīl).[34] The Spirit (الروح al-Ruh, without the adjective "holy" or "exalted") is described, among other things, as the creative spirit from God by which God enlivened Adam, and which inspired in various ways God's messengers and prophets, including Jesus and Abraham. The belief in a "Holy Trinity", according to the Qur'an, is forbidden and deemed to be blasphemy. The same prohibition applies to any idea of the duality of God (Allah).[35][36]

Other religions

Other religions reference a spirit that has a name resembling the Holy Spirit found in the Christian and Jewish faiths, but similar to Islam, this is a different spirit with a different purpose that is unique to those religions, as is seen below:

Bahá'í Faith

The Bahá'í Faith has the concept of the Most Great Spirit, seen as the bounty of God.[37] It is usually used to describe the descent of the Spirit of God upon the messengers/prophets of God who include, among others, Jesus, Muhammad and Bahá'u'lláh.[38]

In Bahá'í belief, the Holy Spirit is the conduit through which the wisdom of God becomes directly associated with his messenger, and it has been described variously in different religions such as the burning bush to Moses, the sacred fire to Zoroaster, the dove to Jesus, the angel Gabriel to Muhammad, and the Maid of Heaven to Bahá'u'lláh.[39] The Bahá'í view rejects the idea that the Holy Spirit is a partner to God in the Godhead, but rather is the pure essence of God's attributes.[40]

The Hinduism concept of Advaita is linked to Trinity and has been briefly explained by Raimon Panikkar, Professor of Comparative Religion and History of Religions, Department of Religious Studies of the University of California. He states that the Holy Spirit, as one of the Three Persons of the Trinity of "father, Logos and Holy Spirit", is a bridge builder between Christianity and Hinduism. He explains that “The meeting of spiritualistic can take place in the Spirit. No new 'system' has primarily to come of this encounter, but a new and yet old spirit must emerges."[41]Atman is Vedic terminology elaborated in Hindu scriptures such as Upanishads and Vedanta signifies the Ultimate Reality and Absolute.[42]

Buddhism

In Buddhism, Holy Spirit is compared to Buddha-nature as a Buddhist image or Christ consciousness, a oneness with an all encompassing plan. Hence, the Holy Spirit is considered the "means of which the faithful develop and journey to their spiritual goal."[43]

Sikhism

In Sikhism, the Guru is the medium and the Holy spirit is stated to have moved from Guru Nanak to the nine Sikh Gurus who followed him culminating with Guru Gobind Singh, the "tenth Guru Nanak".[44]

Zoroastrianism

In Zoroastrianism, the Holy Spirit, also known as Spenta Mainyu, is a hypostasis of Ahura Mazda, the supreme Creator God of Zoroastrianism; the Holy Spirit is seen as the source of all goodness in the universe, the spark of all life within humanity, and is the ultimate guide for humanity to righteousness and communion with God. The Holy Spirit is put in direct opposition to its eternal dual counterpart, Angra Mainyu, who is the source of all wickedness and who leads humanity astray.[45][46]
