Hardin High School is a public high school serving students grades 9–12 located in the city of Hardin, Liberty County, Texas, United States.[4] As part of the Hardin Independent School District, it is attended by students in the city of Hardin, a portion of Big Thicket Lake Estates, and a section of Liberty.[5] It alo includes unincorporated communities of Moss Hill, Rye, Romayor, Franklin and others within Liberty County.[6] It is one of the two secondary schools and the only high school in the district.[7] It participates in UIL region 3A.[8] In 2022, the school received a "B" rating by the Texas Education Agency.[9]

History

As the Hardin area grew, several school districts in the Hardin area voted to consolidate in February 1939.[10] The vote was successful, and in March 1939, Hardin High school was established by the merger of five schools.[11] By September of the same year, architects and district officials received approval from the Texas Department of Education to build a Hardin High School.[12] 16 acres of land were donated Col. R. W. and Geraldine Humphreys of Liberty. Classes began in 1940. The current iteration of Hardin High School was built in 1997.[13][14]

In 2005, four people died and several were left in critical condition as a result of a traffic accident whose site was the front of the school.[15] In 2007, the school received a bomb threat. Liberty County sheriff deputies blocked off the whole area.[16]

As of the 2021-2022 school year, 57.6% of a total 361 students were considered at risk of dropping out of school. At $52,512, the average teacher's salary was $6,375 less than the state average. Teachers averaged 15.5 years of experience. The graduation rate of 98.6% exceeded the state average of 90. The college graduation rate for students who entered 8th grade ten years previously was 22.2%.[17]
