Ghazaleh Golbakhsh is an Iranian-New Zealand filmmaker, actor, writer and academic.[1] Much of Golbakhsh's creative outputs draw from her experiences as an immigrant and her sense of identity.[2]

Life and career

Golbakhsh was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to Auckland, New Zealand with her family in 1987.[2][3] Her family's move was informed by the 1979 revolution and the newly founded oppressive regime present in Iran.[3][4]

Golbakhsh's and her family first lived in the Auckland suburb of Mount Wellington then later moved to Kohimarama and then Northcote.[4]

Golbakhsh noted that racist experiences as a new immigrant in school in New Zealand pushed her to practice her English reading and writing skills.[2] As a result she moved up a year level in school.[2]

Golbakhsh started university at the age of 17 and before finishing moved to London.[2] Later she returned to New Zealand and finished her undergraduate studies.[2] After a stint travelling and working in London, Golbakhsh underwent a Masters of Screen Production at The University of Auckland. Golbakhsh gained a Fulbright scholarship which led to her further her study of screen writing in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California.[1] Golbakhsh also completed a Ph.D. with creative practice in Media and Communications which focused on Iranian diasporic cinema.[1]

Books

Golbakhsh's first book, The Girl from Revolution Road, is a collection of ten personal essays that depict her life, identity and immigrant experience. The collection of essays are titled: The Shah of Grey Lynn, The Legend of Seven Men and Seven Women, The Land of English, Where Rockets Fall and Pohutukawa Grow, Brown Girl in the Ring, The Girl from Revolution Road, War of Terror,The Fawn in a Bubble, Love in the Time of Corona and The King and I. [4][5]

Golbakhsh contributed a chapter 'Hyphenated Identity' to the book Ko Aotearoa Tātou: We Are New Zealand which explores New Zealand writers, poets and academics answering the editors questions, What is New Zealand now, in all its rich variety and contradiction, darkness and light? Who are New Zealanders?[6]
