Frogmore is a plantation house on Edisto Island, South Carolina, built by Waccamaw's Dr. Edward Mitchell in approximately 1820 following his marriage to Edisto Island's Elizabeth Baynard.[2][3]

Frogmore, a rectangular, two-story, hip-roofed house, has a distinctive cotton plantation on an antebellum sea island. Mitchell ran a large plantation with more than 100 slaves in 1840.

When Edisto Island was occupied by the Federal union from 1862 onward, Colonel Moore of the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry used Frogmore as his headquarters.[4]

On May 5, 1987, Frogmore was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places.[5]

What's in Frogmore stew? I think frogs and maybe some tomatoes. I've never heard of that, and I'm from South Carolina. I've never heard of Frogmore stew. § F is for Frogmore stew. Here at the Steamer Oyster and Steakhouse, we specialize in Frogmore stew, also commonly called Lowcountry broil. You want to start with your potatoes, about 1/4 inch thick to make sure they cook thoroughly. It takes the longest, so get those into your pot at least 10 minutes prior to other ingredients. You want to follow it by adding your sausages and your corn. § Another 10 minutes, and you get it up to temperature. Finalize it all by adding your onions and your shrimps. One important part is making sure that your shrimps don't stay down more than a minute. Once they're pink, they're ready to go. If you leave it in, you're gonna ruin your stew. This is all the ingredients. We cook it about 30 minutes. Bring it out; it's in a broil. We add our special seasoning: a combination of Old Bay spices and a couple spices I can't mention 'cause we only use them here. § Contrary to the name, there are no frogs in Frogmore stew. If you're in the Lowcountry, come enjoy a taste of it, Frogmore stew, a Lowcountry cuisine.
