This is a story about a girl named Beatrice who lives with her father, mother, and brother, Caleb, in a future society that is divided into five major factions: Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, Abnegation, and Candor. Beatrice’s parents are Abnegation, however, because Beatrice and Caleb are sixteen years old, they must go through a test and pick what faction they want to be in. Those with no faction become Factionless. As Beatrice takes the faction test, she is put through a series of trials, which reveals that she is not drawn to one faction, but three. This is extremely rare and dangerous, which the society calls Divergent. Still, Beatrice must choose her faction. At the Choosing Ceremony, Caleb chooses Erudite and Beatrice chooses Dauntless, both choices that are against the norm. Beatrice is then led with the other Dauntless initiates and they must jump on a train to Dauntless headquarters. Once at the headquarters, a leader named Max tells them they must jump off a building. Beatrice is the first to jump and lands in the hidden net. As a Dauntless, her new identity and name is Tris. The Dauntless-born initiates are separated from the non-Dauntless born initiates for their training, ranking, and initiation. Four is Tris’ trainer and he first teaches them to shoot a gun. During the training, Tris becomes friends with her fellow trainees, including Al, Christina, and Will. She even gets a tattoo of birds in remembrance of her family. The group of initiates are then trained in hand to hand combat. Tris has to fight Peter, another initiate who is highly competitive, who dominates her in the fight. She eventually recovers from her injuries and continues the training. The initiates are taken to the fence, where Dauntless guards patrol. Four then has them play capture the flag with paintball guns. As Tris’ team is fighting about what to do, Tris and Four climb an old ferris wheel and spot the other team. Tris relays the message and their team wins. Visiting Day arrives where families, both Dauntless and not, visit the initiates. Most non-Dauntless family visit, but Tris’ mother arrives. They talk and Tris’ mother warns her to be careful. Tris also realizes that her mother was born as a Dauntless. After the first stage of initiation is complete, Tris is in the middle of the rankings; however, during the night, the top ranked boy gets stabbed in the eye with a knife by Peter. During the next phase of initiation, all of the initiates are given a serum that reveals their fears and the instructors can watch. In Tris’ tests, she often envisions her family. However, Four notices how Tris handles the simulation and recognizes that she is Divergent. He tells her that she has to keep it a secret. After the second phase of initiation, Tris is ranked in first place, but she is kidnapped and nearly thrown into the chasm by Peter and two others. Four rescues her, but before the perpetrators escape, she recognizes Al as one of the kidnappers. Al tries to apologize, but Tris doesn’t want to see him. Confused and alone, Al jumps into the chasm and dies. Tris decides to visit her brother, Caleb, and so she leaves and enters the city where the Erudite live and train. They see each other and Caleb tells her that something bad is going to happen to the Abnegation. Meanwhile, Tris and Four become close and become romantically involved. The final phase of initiation involves each initiate facing their fears in a virtual reality simulation. One night, Tris goes with Four into his virtual reality simulation of his fears and he reveals his true identity, the son of a famous Abnegation leader. His real name is Tobias. The final day of initiation arrives with each initiate entering the simulation one at a time. Tris is last to enter the simulation. She faces her fears, including drowning, crows, and killing her family, but is also presented with a romantic scene with Tobias as intimacy scares her. When her simulation is over, Tris quietly leaves and the Dauntless celebrate the new initiates the following day, injecting each initiate with a special serum. That night, Tris wakes up to find that every initiate is up and preparing for battle in a sleepwalking state of mind. She goes along with them even if she is fully aware of what is happening and everyone boards a train. Tris sees Tobias on the train and the two of them escape, as they are the only ones not affected by the serum’s control. Soon, the Dauntless begin shooting the Abnegation members in the city. As Tobias and Tris try to escape, they are captured by Dauntless soldiers and brought to Jeanine, leader of the Erudite. She reveals her plan to take over the government and recognizes that both Tobias and Tris are Divergent, which makes them immune to the serum. Tobias is taken away to the control room, while Tris is left in a glass chamber to drown. However, Tris’ mother rescues her. As they escape, Tris’ mother reveals that she is also Divergent, but the Dauntless soldiers kill her as Tris runs to where her father and brother are hiding. After meeting up with her father, brother, and a few others, including Tobias’ father, Tris leads some of them back to Dauntless headquarters to shut down the computer that is controlling the Dauntless soldiers. Tris and her father make it to the building, but her father is killed in action. Tris makes it to the control room only to be confronted by Tobias. He nearly shoots her, but quickly recognizes her and they shutdown the computer program. In the end, Tris leads the group toward Amity headquarters as the Dauntless soldiers wake up to what they’ve done.

Background

According to Roth, the stories serve as a prequel to the Divergent trilogy. She said, "The e-shorts will address Tobias's backstory and some of the mysterious things going on in the world before Tris chose Dauntless sleep. Together, they form a kind of Tobias-centered Divergent prequel, though there is some overlap."[16]

Talking about her decision to write from the perspective of Four, Roth said, "In my mind, he has a distinct history and a complex psychology, so there’s always a lot to draw from when he’s on the page, and it’s an opportunity for me to break from Tris’s sparse, straightforward voice and try to introduce just a little bit more poetic language. I also know, from many tweets and blog comments and in-person comments, that Divergent readers are interested in hearing more of his voice, which made him an obvious candidate! My readers have given me so much enthusiasm and honesty and wisdom. The opportunity to write something that I knew they wanted to read was really appealing to me."[16]

In July 2014, Roth revealed that she initially wrote Divergent from Four's point of view and that the character Tris was not then present in the story. She explained that "it was the super rough draft. I've been calling it the "proto-draft." It happened before the rough draft, which sounds crazy. It was just a couple of pages from his perspective, and it just didn't work in the same way that Tris's voice worked because she's kind of surprising as the narrator of that particular story. But as I wrote the series, he became more complicated and his story started to feel urgent also. So, it's great that they let me keep writing about him!"[17]

The Transfer features Four as a 16-year-old before his Choosing Day Ceremony and as a Dauntless initiate. It was published by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins and released on September 3, 2013.[4][7][20][21][22]

Plot

16-year-old Tobias Eaton, at his father, Marcus's instruction, picks the choices that lead him to pass for Abnegation during his Aptitude Test. His meeting with a factionless man who seems to know his deceased mother, however, startles his choice, especially when the abusive Marcus beats him for lying about a gift his mother gave to him. Tobias eventually chooses Dauntless on Choosing Day, shocking Marcus.

Tobias is introduced to his instructor, Amar, and his fellow initiates, including Erudite transfer Eric. In a slight change, the initiates now have to face their fears right after making the jump from the roof. Tobias' four fears: his acrophobia, claustrophobia, remorse for shooting innocents, and his father's abuses, astonishes Amar. Since no other Dauntless has that low of a number of fears, Amar gives Tobias his new name: "Four".

Cover

The cover of The Transfer features a circle of train cars, which are colliding in two different places.[23] Joel Tipple, who designed this cover, is also designing the covers for rest of the series.[16]

Reception

BiblioFiend in its review said that "The Transfer gave an immense amount of depth to a character who always seemed so secretive and hard. Getting inside Four’s mind was a great way to understand his motives and reasoning for choosing to leave Abnegation."[24]

The Initiate reveals Four's life as a Dauntless initiate. It was published by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins and released on July 8, 2014.[4][25][26]

Plot

Tobias "Four" Eaton goes through his Dauntless initiation tests. His first task has him forge a Dauntless tattoo. His next task is to fight his archrival, Eric, whom he manages to defeat. As he begins bonding with his Dauntless-born fellow initiates, Ezekiel "Zeke" and Shauna, he begins to forgo his isolationist and quiet Abnegation principle and starts embracing the lifestyle of a Dauntless.

In Four's next test, he faces his fears again, but manages to recognize that it is artificial and escapes from it in an unorthodox manner. Amar tells him that he also passed his test like Four, warning the latter not to do the test with that method again. The two are forced to do the test by Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews. Though Four is careful, Amar is found dead a week after, which everyone but Four attributes to suicide. Four threatens Eric for his supposed part in causing Amar's death before the test announcement, in which Four ranks first. While celebrating his achievement, Four sees what appears to be his mother boarding a factionless train in the middle of the night.

Cover

The cover of The Initiate features a circle of syringes filled with blue coloured serum, all of them pointing at the centre of the circle. Like all the previous covers in the Divergent trilogy, Joel Tipple designed this cover.[16]

The Son explores Four's life as a Dauntless member. It was published by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins and released on July 8, 2014.[4][27][28]

Plot

The recently initiated Dauntless member, Tobias "Four" Eaton, is offered a chance to be promoted to the position of leader by Max, competing with his archenemy, Eric. He suspects that something foul is going on ever since the mysterious death of his mentor, Amar, for being a Divergent, which he links to Erudite, led by Jeanine Matthews, controlling Dauntless for a secret purpose. At the same time, he receives a note which leads him to reunite with his factionless mother, Evelyn, long presumed dead. Though their meeting is rough, Evelyn tells Four that there is a conspiracy going on and that she is still welcoming him to join her. Four angrily rejects this offer, as he feels betrayed by his own mother for lying to him. Four goes on a double date with Zeke, but it doesn't go well for Four. Meanwhile, Shauna comes to Four and reveals that she wants to go to the practice room. However, when she walks past the hall to get there, she sees Zeke making love with his date. This presumably makes Shauna jealous, as during practice Four notices that she is punching harder than usual.

Four eavesdrops on Max's conversation with Jeanine which confirms his suspicion that Jeanine intends to use whoever is selected to be leader as a pawn. He intentionally fails during the final interview for the job in favor of becoming instructor for the new initiates. This allows Eric to win and implement his harsher suggestion for the next initiation tests. Four then decides to keep contact with his mother by delivering her a letter through an aide: the factionless man whom he met after his Aptitude Test several weeks before.

Cover

The cover of The Son features a circle of dark inky cloud, with lightning striking at two different points of circle. Like all the previous covers in the Divergent trilogy, Joel Tipple designed this cover.[16]

The Traitor narrates early parts of Divergent from Four's point of view. It was published by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins and released on July 8, 2014.[4][29][30]

Plot

Two years after the events of The Son, Tobias "Four" Eaton is working as the instructor for Dauntless transfer initiates, including Tris Prior. For two years, he has been secretly spying on Max and Jeanine Matthews and keeping contact with his mother, Evelyn. Four learns that Max and Jeanine are planning on an invasion to Abnegation. Evelyn responds nonchalantly when Four brings it up, and makes Four reconsider his position on his old faction.

Throughout the story, Four begins to get closer with Tris, helped by his admiration of her bravery and selflessness. He becomes protective of her, growing concerned when he learns that she is also a Divergent, and also saves her from an attack by her desperate fellow initiates. He also eventually allows her to know more about him by going through his fear landscape together. Four realizes that he will have to betray his new faction to protect his old faction: by attempting to warn his father, Marcus, about the upcoming invasion, which the latter quickly brushes off. Seeing another option, he looks to Tris for assistance.

Cover

The cover of The Traitor features a greenish circle of crows flying away. Like all the previous covers in the Divergent trilogy, Joel Tipple designed this cover.[16]

Exclusive scenes

The book also features three exclusive scenes that retell the moments when Tobias "Four" Eaton first becomes acquainted with Beatrice "Tris" Prior.

First jumper–Tris!

Four, in his second year as instructor, is waiting for the initiates to jump through the hole into the net of rope alongside his fellow instructor, Lauren, who bets that the first jumper is yet another Dauntless-born initiate. Surprisingly for the two of them, the first jumper is a transfer, and a 'Stiff;'Abnegation. When he asks for her name, she hesitates and he feels she is familiar to him in some way. She eventually answers "Tris", and Four then proclaims, "First jumper–Tris!".

Careful, Tris

Four introduces his pupils to the Pit. When the curious Candor transfer, Christina, bogs him on questions about his name and the Pit, he answers coldly in an attempt to make his pupils more serious about Dauntless. During the introduction in dinner, Four sits next to Tris, Christina, Will, and Al. Eric acts friendly to him and dismisses Tris as a "Stiff", prompting Tris to question about Four's old faction. He again responds coldly, but to his surprise, she gives a bold response. He responds back with "Careful, Tris" and leaves, realizing that Tris is the daughter of his father's friend, Andrew Prior.

You look good, Tris

Four is drunk with Zeke and begins laughing at a silly joke near the Pit. He approaches Tris, who is with her friends, and begins flirting with her. She puts up the defensive, but when Four interjects with "You look good, Tris" while touching her, she laughs and says that he should do that while sober, obviously embarrassed. While he is talking with Tris she mentions that he should not be near the Pit while being drunk and Four winks and says he would do what she said. Four then thinks that being close with Tris helps him better to escape the harsh reality than alcohol.
