Haynie outranked Morrison and therefore was the senior commander. Quickly into the fighting Morrison was wounded and when the attacked failed Haynie's regiment was returned to the 2nd Brigade. (Cooling p. 145) Leonard F. Ross was then elevated to command of the 3rd Brigade.
