Summary

Description

Xanthoconium separans (Peck) Halling & Both

Image location: Wetumpka, Alabama, USA

Yes, obs 282660 has all the technical info on this subject. Morphologically, Cassandra’s obsie looks more like obs 280000, which is genetically distinct from 282660. I haven’t posted the genetic data for 280000 yet, but will eventually do so. So, we clearly have a “B. separans group/Xanthoconium separans” in the USA consisting of at least two phylogenetic taxa. The geographic distribution limits of these two entities are unknown, but it’s possible they overlap around VA/NC. The southern “separans” grows at least as far north as NC, as per the GenBank LSU record. It’s not clear how far south and west Peck’s separans occurs. More collections need to be genetically screened from the entire range of the Atlantic seaboard and into mid-west. I don’t know how reliably the two can be separated in the field, but Ron Pastorino’s TX collections have much wider spores than what’s been reported for Peck’s separans. Looking at the distribution map of what has been identified as B. separans on MushroomObserver, this species group covers a vast territory — from central VT south to GA and west to northern WI and into eastern TX; the western boundary goes through IL and Missouri. There is also a separate pocket in Mexico (obs 210387 and obs 241774).
