Object history Der Abtstab erinnert an das Benediktinerkloster Aura, das Bischof Otto von Bamberg (1102 bis 1139) zwischen 1108 und 1113 an der Stelle einer Burg gründete. Der erste Abt, Ekkehard von Aura (gestorben 1125), machte als bedeutender Historiograf das Kloster weithin bekannt. Er setzte die Weltchronik des Benediktiners Frutolf (gestorben 1103) fort. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hielt man diese Chronik für das alleinige Werk Ekkehards von Aura. Fürstbischof Friedrich von Wirsberg (1558 bis 1573) hob das Kloster im Jahr 1564 auf. Die Klosterkirche ist dem heiligen Laurentius und dem heiligen Georg geweiht. Auf die enge Verbindung des Ortes zum gleichnamigen Kloster weisen die Attribute der beiden Heiligen, der Rost und das Kreuz, hin. Die Farben Silber und Rot sind die Farben des Hochstifts Würzburg und erinnern an dessen Landesherrschaft bis zum Ende des Alten Reichs.
