Deutsch: Der Innenminister des Landes Brandenburg hat dem Landkreis Prignitz am 14. März 1994 genehmigt, das vorstehend beschriebene Wappen zu führen.
Der mit den Kommunalwahlen vom 5. Dezember 1993 gebildete Landkreis Prignitz bedurfte eines neuen Wappens, das die historische Tradition der Landschaft Prignitz und ihrer Städte widerspiegelt. Die Schildteilung Rot über Silber zeigt die Farben des Landes Brandenburg. Der Wellenschnitt weist auf die Lage an der Elbe. Die flugbereite Gans erinnert an das Geschlecht der Gans Edlen Herren zu Putlitz, die im 12. Jahrhundert gemeinsam mit dem Bischof von Havelberg in der Prignitz Christentum und deutsche Kultur einführten und ländliche Kolonisation betrieben. Ihr Symbol kehrt im Wappen der Stadt Putlitz wieder und stand früher auch für Wittenberge. Der Perlenkranz steht für die Kreisstadt Perleberg, der Wolf für die bisherige Kreisstadt Pritzwalk.
English: The arms were granted 14 March 1994.
The goose in the upper part of the arms is a canting symbol for one of the oldest ruling families in the district, the Gans family from the 12th century. The wavy division line symbolises the Elbe river. The pearls in the upper part are canting for the city of Perleberg. The wolf in the lower half is derived from the arms of the city of Pritzwalk.
