File:WLA hmns Hell Creek Formation Triceratops.jpg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Description

Horned dinosaur ceratopsian, Triceratops
(Cretaceous, Hell Creek Formation, Corson County, South Dakota)
HMNS1082

Triceratops was the largest of horned dinosaurs and lived at the very end of the Cretaceous Period, shortly before the extinction of all dinosaurs approximately 65 million years ago. Triceratops probably used its formidable array of frill and horns for protection against large contemporary predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex. Triceratops may also have engaged in battles with others of its species, perhaps to establish sexual dominance much as some living animals with horns and antlers do today.
