Summary

Description View From Battle Hill, a steel engraving by James Smillie. Battle Hill is the highest point in Brooklyn, New York. Located in what is now Greenwood Cemetery, Battle Hill was named for the fighting that occured on its slopes between American and British troops during the Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776. James Smillie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1807 and went to New York City in 1829. He engraved plates for the New York-Mirror also did engraving for the plates used to make bank-notes. Died in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1885.
