Use of sharia in Nigeria by state.

  • The twelve sharia states are Zamfara, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto and Yobe.[1]
  • Borno, Gombe and Yobe have not yet begun to apply their Sharia Penal Codes.[2]


 
States where sharia plays no role in the judicial system.
 
States where sharia applies in personal status issues (such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and child custody), but otherwise have a secular legal system.
 
States where sharia applies in full, covering personal status issues as well as criminal proceedings.
