VeterinaryAnatomy and Internal Pathology and Dean of the VeterinaryFaculty, he having just returned from abroad for the purposeof undertaking the work of founding such a school. The courseas outlined by Dr. Huidekoper, who had studied at variousEuropean Veterinary Schools, extended then over a period ofthree years, but in the fall of 1916 it was extended to fouryears. The Department was opened on October 2, 1884, withtwenty students, in a series of well-equipped buildings locatedalong Hamilton Walk, where the Medical Building now stands.In 1901 the School and Hospital moved into temporary quarterson the present site. In 1903 the plot of ground on Thirty-ninthStreet between Woodland Avenue and DeLancey Street waspurchased, and a section of the new building started for theSchool in 1906. New sections were added from year to yearuntil the entire courtyard was enclosed in 1912. The School in1916 had a teaching staff of twenty-four and an enrollment ofone hundred and forty-seven students.

i65 THE VETERINARY BUILDING AND HOSPITAL oc-cupies a lot at Thirty-ninth Street, DeLancey Street and Wood-land Avenue, 260 by 210 feet. The buildings are constructedaround a square courtyard, and with their equipment form oneof the most complete plants of the kind. The buildings weredesigned by Cope and Stewardson in a style of architectureadopted from the English Collegiate of the seventeenth century,in keeping with that of the Dormitories and other recentlyconstructed buildings. They are fireproof, and are constructedof hard-burnt brick with limestone trimmings, and the roof ofgreen slate. The main entrance is through an archway onThirty-ninth Street. In the series of buildings the School and Hospital Depart-ments are entirely separated. In the building along Thirty-ninthStreet, to the north on the first floor, are the administrationoffices of the School and Faculty, and the library.
