Description Map showing which areas of the United States did and did not allow slavery under the proposed Wilmot Proviso of 1846. New York (1799) and New Jersey (1804) adopted laws gradually freeing enslaved people, but some people in these states remained enslaved until 1824 (NY) and 1865 (NJ). Territories and states which had not specifically banned slavery are colored red/pink.
