File:Tungsten impact crater on Mars.png

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Original file(1,536 × 1,136 pixels, file size: 2.63 MB, MIME type: image/png)

Summary

Description
This high-resolution orbital image represents the largest (~6m in diameter) of craters created on Mars at 18.956°N, 76.202°E after the impact of one of two tungsten CBMD (cruise mass balance devices) 77,5 kg each released on February 18, 2021 during the landing of the Mars-2020 mission.

This image is a crop of the enhanced colour HiRISE image with observation ID ESP_069231_1990. North is up, and illumination is from the left. The abundant aeolian ripples that trend north–south demonstrate that the surface materials are dominantly poorly consolidated and fine grained (sand), harnessed by the wind.
