THE PERSONAL SEAL OF JOHN MCNEILL, BRITISH ENVOY TO PERSIA

IRAN, DATED AH 1252/1836-7 AD Of rectangular form, carved with an inscription in elegant nasta'liq script on two lines, the ground with dense floral scroll, the gold mount with applied floral bud set with red gem 1in. (2.5cm.) across

The inscription reads Aylji (?) makhsus wa wazir mukhtar Qajar Inkliz Maknil Jan.

John McNeill (1795-1883 AD) was attached to the East India Company's legation in Persia. He was appointed secretary of the special embassy sent to Tehran to congratulate Muhammad Shah on his accession to power. He was envoy to Persia between 1836 and 1844 with a three year interruption between 1838 and 1841.
