Summary

The photo, taken in August, 2010, looks southerly across the position of Gun 2 towards the position of Gun 1 of Battery Stevenson, an abandoned U.S. Coast Artillery battery in Fort Warren on Georges Island in Boston Harbor.

The directing point for this battery of two 12-inch guns was a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey marker which is set in the top of a 10-inch square granite post which protrudes about 5 inches above the ground. This post is visible in the grass apron between the two gun pits and almost exactly at horizontal midpoint of the frame. The group of visitors on the left is looking down into the pit for Gun 1, and the marker is located roughly below the position of the center person in this group.

The low peninsula in the background (center) is the town of Hull, MA, and the small tower at left rear is the water tower at the peak of Telegraph Hill at Ft. Revere Park in Hull.
