Description
St. Bartholomew the Great - the tomb of Sir Walter Mildmay (1520-1589), founder of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and from 1566 Chancellor of the Exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I - see http://www.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/famous/index.cfm?id=5. The arms shown on the monument (see image[1]) are quarterly of four:
  • 1: Argent, three lions rampant azure (Mildmay ancient; in 1583 Sir Walter Mildmay is recorded as having a "restitution of the ancient arms"[2]), with a martlet for difference.
  • 2: Per fess nebulée argent and sable, three greyhound's heads couped counter-changed collared gules studded or (Mildmay modern, per www.heraldry-online.org.uk).
  • 3: Azure, on a canton or a mullet sable (Le Rowse, 13th c.), tinctures incorrectly restored on monument
  • 4: Sable, a chevron embattled or between three roses argent (Cornish of Much Waltham, Essex, 15th c.)
