DescriptionSoldiers Memorial, Chestnut Street, St. Louis, MO - 53125676679.jpg
Built in 1936-1938, this Stripped Classical Revival-style building was designed by Mauran, Russell and Crowell to serve as a military memorial and museum commemorating veterans and war dead from the St. Louis area. The building is clad in limestone with a granite base, central open-air porch with a mosaic tile ceiling, aluminum storefronts with decorative screens and aluminum doors, aluminum torchiere-style light fixtures, square fluted pillars on the exterior wraparound portico, a recessed penthouse, medallions with sculptural reliefs, large urns at the corners of the terrace the surrounds the building, large staircases at the front and rear of the building with large statues and sculptures on plinths flanking the steps, and aluminum flagpoles. The building’s interior features exhibits about veterans and war heroes from Missouri, aluminum chandeliers, marble walls, aluminum doors and grilles, terrazzo floors, stairs with aluminum railings, and elevator with aluminum doors. The building today continues to serve as a war memorial, with exhibits today being dedicated to more recent wars and experiences.
