| Description | One among the Shang dynasty versions of the grapheme 子 zi, meaning "son", "offspring". It was used as the surname of the Shang royal lineage. According to John C. Didier it is related to the concept of spiritual and political centrality (中 zhōng), as both contain the element of the ritual vessel and space, and ultimately to the godhead of the squared north celestial pole (口 Dīng).
