Summary

Description
Mortonson-Van Leer Log Cabin, sometimes Schorn log cabin in New Sweden Park, Swedesboro, NJ. In the background is Trinity Church, aka Old Swedes Church, which is on the NRHP. The cabin is not on the NRHP, but if the signs are to be believed ... The cabin has been moved here from the Grand Sprute Plantation on Raccoon Creek. It was built by Morton Mortonsen, grandfather of John Morton, signer of the declaration of independence. Morton Mortonsen came to America in 1654 and died before 1700.

Cabin was NOT used as a residence - but as a granary - and also reportedly as a hiding place on the undergrand railroad. At least 2 residences associated with Mortonsen are on the NRHP (near Philadelphia). This is a particularly interesting log cabin because of the dovetailed logs and the close fit of the logs, leaving very little to be chinked between the logs. This is the theory of Swedish log cabins (e.g. shown at American Swedish Museum in Philadelphia); but rarely seen in old cabins.

NW corner of Church St. and King's Hwy.
