Italiano: Maschera Mwisi Gwa So'o - Maschera facciale zoomorfa (scimpanzé) di forma discoidale e piatta, caratterizzata dall'ampia arcata sopraccigliare, da grandi occhi a mandorla forati e obliqui, convergenti al centro. Il naso inusitatamente breve resta all'altezza degli occhi, lasciando vuoto lo spazio sottostante della maschera. Anche la bocca non è incisa sul piano ma al di sotto dell'estremità inferiore. La maschera rappresenta uno scimpanzé, animale simbolo di fecondità. La maschera fa la sua apparizione in occasione dei "secondi funerali", quelli che a una certa distanza di tempo dalla sepoltura del morto, segnano la fine del lutto. Secondo T. Blakely e P. Blakely (1987), la grande bocca aperta all'estremità inferiore della maschera e le alte sopracciglia indicano uno stato di ebbrezza o di follia, più in generale un atteggiamento animalesco non appropriato per una persona. Gli Hemba, infatti, considerano calma e riservatezza (il tenere la bocca chiusa) virtù fondamentali. Il movimento scomposto e agitato della maschera durante la danza conferma quanto i tratti scolpiti nel legno, considerati spaventosi, già esprimono. La maschera mischia elementi umani e scimmieschi (nel costume vi è tanto una pelle di scimmia che un tessuto di corteccia, simbolo di tempi lontani) per indicare lo stato liminare e disordinato della morte. Nel proseguimento della danza, però, l'animale si calma e il suo comportamento comincia a suscitare il riso, sancendo così il ritorno del villaggio alla normalità e l'arrivo del morto nel mondo degli antenati.
