Two-masted brig USS Adams, built in 1799. She was captured by British forces at Detroit August 16, 1812, and renamed HMS Detroit. She was retaken in October 1812, and burnt that same day to avoid recapture.
This picture shows the vessel weighing anchor for her last voyage under British colours. She was headed to Fort Erie. It is in pencil, with ruled border of pencil, on watercolour board; coloured with watercolour & touches of opaque white by Owen Staples. The original is 236 x 286 mm.
