Description
Photograph of a burial vault built circa 1890 to protect against premature burial. The Popular Mechanics magazine article this photo illustrates says that the chambers are lined with "heavy felt" in case the entombed panicked on waking, and each are linked to an air vent to prevent suffocation. The doors can be opened from the inside by means of a "handwheel."
