Parque Nacional La Campana - Region de Valparaiso

La palma chilena, especie cuyo nombre científico es Jubaea chilensis, pertenece a la familia de las palmáceas, es la palma más austral del mundo y es endémica (nativa) de Chile. Se distribuye en forma natural entre La Serena y Talca, aproximadamente; encontrándose algunos ejemplares hasta la zona de Arauco.

Se reconoce porque es la única palmera de tronco liso, además presenta un angostamiento a los ocho a diez metros de altura, que ocurre al llegar a la madurez.

Su tronco es cilíndrico, de color grisáceo, cuya base tiene un diámetro variable entre 0,7 y 1 m; pudiendo llegar a medir hasta veinticinco metros de altura.

Por definición, las palmas no son árboles, sus troncos no son de madera, ellos están compuestos de fibras. Por lo tanto, son hierbas gigantescas, como un tipo de pasto gigante, único en el mundo, muy sensible a la depredación y que hay que preservar.

Entre las características más llamativas de la palma chilena está su lento crecimiento (llega al estado de madurez recién a los sesenta años) y su capacidad de resistir el fuego debido a componentes de su corteza, además, crece principalmente en las laderas de exposición norte de los cerros áridos.
