Summary

Description
Looking south through Barroom on the first floor of the Old Ebbitt Grill located at 1427 F Street NW, Washington, D.C., United States. Old Ebbitt Grill was originally a restaurant which existed as part of the Ebbitt House hotel, which was established in 1856. The hotel was located on the southeast corner of F Street and 14th Street in Washington, D.C. The original hotel was razed in 1872, and a newer, much larger hotel with a greatly expanded and much more luxurious dining room built. The dining room was significantly renovated in 1910. Ebbitt House closed in 1925, and the restaurant's furnishings were purchased by Anders R. Lofstrand, Sr. (a local restauranteur and veteran bar owner). The "Old Ebbitt Grill" restaurant was moved to 1427 F Street NW. Lofstrand occupied all four floors of this existing building. The restaurant passed into the hands of the Clyde's Restaurant Group in 1970 after a tax auction. In 1977, the building was demolished to make way for the Metropolitan Square development. However, Old Ebbitt Grill re-established itself on the northwest corner of Metropolitan Square at 675 15th Street NW. It remains in existence as of 2012, and is the oldest bar and restaurant in the city.
