Summary

Description
Serbian folk costume occupies a prominent place in the culture and tradition of the Serbian people. Its role throughout history is very important as a symbol of ethnic identity, and it also stands out for its artistic and aesthetic values. We have mostly received preserved clothing items from the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, with various shapes and decorations in both women's and men's costumes. Each area inhabited by Serbs throughout history was characterized by a special costume. By the way they dressed, it was recognized not only where they came from, but especially in mixed ethnic areas, and to which ethnic or national community they belong. In their historical development, various folk costumes had multiple meanings in the life of the people, but they were also exposed to numerous influences between different ethnic groups, so that in addition to the characteristics of the time in which they were handmade and worn, they contain other clothing elements from past times.
