Summary

Description
Inscription on the monument at Execution hill near uMgungundlovu that commemorates the slaughter of the voortrekker leader Piet Retief (57) and his entourage of 72 men, 14 sons (3 youths) and 30+ servants on 6 February 1838. The monument, dating from 1922, overlooks the mass grave in which the remains of the deceased were buried by the Wen commando on 21 December 1838. The four underlined names appear on the Retief-Dingane Treaty. The spouses and children of marked* names were murdered 10/11 days later during the Weenen massacre. Of A. van Dijk's 11 children one did survive. Kommandant Abraham C. Greyling (38) was Piet Retief's stepson and Commandant Pieter (L. P. J.) Meyer (26) his son-in-law. M. J. Oosthuijse (c.47) was the father of two Oosthuijse brothers on the list, and besides of Tienie Oosthuijse, who heroically assisted the encircled defenders of Rensburgkoppie.
