Description
The Mackie Building at 225 E. Michigan Street in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was built in 1879 as the former Chamber of Commerce. Also known as the Produce or Grain Exchange, it was for a time the world's largest wheat exchange and is now a private commercial building. Designed by E. Townsend Mix as a fireproof building in an eclectic style that combined an Italian Renaissance interior with an exterior variously described as Modern Italian or typical of Glasgow or Edinburgh, it has a basement level covered with Minnesota granite, higher masonry of Ohio sandstone, and Cream City brick. Its clock tower rises to a height of 175 feet.]
