As Trenchard died in 1956 the photo is more than 50 years old. It was taken from the RAF Reserves official web site and although no copyright notice can be found, it is believed that the web site is covered by UK Crown Copyright. On that basis, the image is Crown Copyright, over 50 years old and is therefore in the public domain. The photograph is also found in Boyle's biography "Trenchard Man of Vision" on the plate facing p. 609 and no copyright or source is given (Boyle ordinarily provides sources/copyright). The fact that the photograph was taken in time of war on an RAF establishment supports the Crown Copyright view.

Public domain
This work created by the United Kingdom Government is in the public domain.

This is because it is one of the following:

  1. It is a photograph taken prior to 1 June 1957; or
  2. It was published prior to 1974; or
  3. It is an artistic work other than a photograph or engraving (e.g. a painting) which was created prior to 1974.

HMSO has declared that the expiry of Crown Copyrights applies worldwide (ref: HMSO Email Reply)
