Summary

Description
A marble fireplace in Leicester's Gatehouse, Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire, with initials "RL" of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (1532-1588) and the Ragged Staff heraldic badge, used by the Earls of Warwick, circumscribed by the Garter. Sable, a ragged staff argent is the attributed coat of arms of Morvidus (as stated in Berry, William, Encyclopaedia Heraldica Or Complete Dictionary of Heraldry, Volume 2, 1828[1]) an Earl of Warwick and legendary king of the Britons from 341 to 336 BC., as recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth. The letters R and L on either side of the shield are also in the form of ragged staffs. Underneath vivit post, "he lived after". At right the first letters of his motto "Droit et Loyal".
