| Description |
Ostracods are crustaceans up to 2 mm long that can be found in all kinds of water bodies: both sea and fresh water, small puddles, ponds, large lakes, rivers, springs, groundwater, etc. They prefer to operate in water close to the bottom, but especially in the sea, some species can also be found in the upper water layer. Already from the shore of the pond, you can see these miniature bean-shaped animals climbing or swimming in the shallow water. About 5,700 species of crustaceans are known in world, 93 have been found in Estonian waters, but the existence of about 100 species is assumed.
This specimen belongs to the species Dolerocypris fasciata and was found in Lake Neerut in Estonia |
