Summary

Description The Japanese destroyer JMSDF Asakaze (DD-181) refueling from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CVA-38) in 1959. The Shangri-La was deployed to the Western Pacific from 9 March to 3 October 1959.
Asakaze had been commissioned in 1941 as USS Ellyson (DD-454). She was decommissioned 19 October 1954, and transferred to the Japanese Government 20 October 1954 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. She served in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force until 1970 when the ship was returned to the United States, and was sold to Taiwan, where she was cannibalized for spare parts.
