File:Ironmaster of the Savoy.png

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Original file(2,008 × 2,712 pixels, file size: 1.42 MB, MIME type: image/png)

Description 1885 cartoon by Alfred Bryan that appeared in The Ent’racte Annual for that year. W. S. Gilbert is depicted in a suit of armour, wielding a mallet labelled 'discipline' and towering over the diminutive figure of Richard D'Oyly Carte. When this was published, The Ironmaster, a play by Pinero had recently finished a successful run at the St James's Theatre, so this cartoon was a reference to a different type of 'iron master' at the Savoy Theatre.
