Description
This geocolor image from GOES-16 shows Hurricane Katia (l) Hurricane Irma (m) and Hurricane Jose (r) in the Atlantic Ocean on September 7, 2017. According to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, Katia, a category 1 storm, is located about 215 miles east of Tampico, Mexico, and, at present, is somewhat stationary. Katia has maximum sustained winds near 80 mph with higher gusts. Forecasters say some strengthening is forecast during the next 36 hours and Katia could be near major hurricane strength at landfall. Irma, a category 5 storm, has maximum sustained winds of 180 miles per hour and is heading for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The storm is forecast to remain a powerful category 4 or 5 hurricane during the next couple of days. Jose, a category 1 storm, has maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour and is located about 815 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Forecasters say Jose may strengthen during the next 48 hours.
